The most common mistake I've noticed when reading a book on Wattpad or something a friend is writing is, there are no quotation marks. Quotation marks allow the reader to decipher whether a person is speaking or not, otherwise it just looks like it's a part of the narrative part of the story. You wouldn't want that. It makes it harder for a person to continue reading your book. No one want to sit through hours of trying to read your book when it shouldn't take them less than a couple minutes.

If I'm reading a book and I notice there are no quotation marks where there should be then I admediately click out of the book.

Make sure your quotation marks are placed where they need to be, at the beginning of a sentence when a person is beginning to talk and at the end. This lets a person know when the person starts and finish talking.

Example 1: what NOT to do:

I look around the room and notice that the room is empty. Hello! I yell. I get no response.

Example 2: what TO do:

I look around the room and notice that the room is empty. "Hello!" I yell. I get no response.

Notice the quotation Mark at the end is placed after the exclamation mark, where it should be. It should not be before the mark that stops the sentence.

Quotation marks are also suppose to be used when you are quoting someone else's work, otherwise it just looks like you tried to copy, steal, their work. This is a crime and you can be sued for this. Also be sure to include where you got the information from.
