Unexpected

Chapter 28

A loud but gentle knock on the door startles me from my small nap in the hotel room. I rub my tired eyes and get out of the bed then walk to the door. I open the door and crease my eyebrows when I see a tall man standing outside the door, looking down at me. 

“Hello?” I say with a raspy voice. 

The man looks behind me. “Is Emery here?” he questions. 

I shake my head. “He’s with his friends, can I help you?” I answer back. 

The man who looked just maybe in his early twenties shook his black mop of hair. “Just heard he was back in town and I wanted to talk to him.”

I bite my bottom lip. “Are you a…..?” 

“Friend, very close friend,” he replies. 

I hate doing this but… “Um you can come in, I’m sure Emery will be back in a little while.” the man smiles then walks in the room. I sigh then close the door and turn around to see the guy looking around at the small room. 

“Are you his girlfriend?” he questions when he sits on a chair stuffed in a corner of the room. 

“No, I’m just a friend as well,” the guys nods. “I’m Cedes.” 

“Nice to meet you Cedes and Thane.” 

I nod, weird name. “So Thane how long have you known Emery for?” I wonder as he seems a little bit older than Emery but yet so does all his friends. 

“We met back when he was a Freshman in high school and I was a Senior. We did some sports together then we did other shit with his friends and the rest is just history. The other day I was wondering if Emery was ever going to come back but I guess he is,” Thane chuckles. I smile then sit down at the edge of the bed. “I’m guessing your someone back in Mass?” 

I nod. “We use to be neighbors before he moved here, so yeah. He’s actually staying with me back in Mass.” 

Thane raises an eyebrow. “Isn’t that at least bit awkward?” Thane’s thick and deep voice questions. 

“No? I wouldn’t see why?” 

Thane shrugs. “You guys had to at least fall for each other at some point, right?” 

I shake my head. “Nah, I have a boyfriend and he was dating Cara when he moved back so it wasn’t really weird or awkward,” Thane nods. “so are you Emery really close?” 

Thane smirks. “Very close.” 

The way Thane said that just made goosebumps run up and down my arms and just didn’t seem right. Sure I heard of Max, Josh, Riley and ect. But never Thane. Thane seemed to know much of Emery but never once did Emery mention a ‘Thane’. All of this was sketchy and I immediately regret letting him in the hotel room. I mean how the hell did he even know where he was staying?! Oh God, I hope I didn’t just let a complete stranger into the room. 

Suddenly the door clicks open and I let out a long and dragged sigh out as I knew this was Emery. 

“Cedes you ditched us w- Thane?” Emery’s voice dripped with venom when he walks into the room and spots Thane. Thane stands up and grins at Emery. 

“It hurts Emery that I never got a call from you. It scars,” Thane teases but shrugs. “I met Cedes, it was nice talking to her she seems like a nice girl but you know it was a risk bringing her here. You out of all people should have been more careful but the things do for the girls you like have never changed, Emery. I deserve a call by this week!” Thane exclaims as he leaves the hotel room. 

Emery and I stare at each other with wide eyes for what seemed like hours and hours. It was a risk bringing her here.

Things have been pretty weird after Thane left. Even though it was 8 we still laid in bed and went to bed then around 9 we woke up and barely said three words to each other. We were walking around a busy city literally going no where but just walking and walking all around. I think Emery needed to get things out of his head but it was still no excuse to kind of ignore me. Sure, Thane was obviously someone Emery didn’t like because it was quit obvious but Emery still needs to explain everything! Thane was something we needed to discuss about not ignore. I have a million and one questions to ask but Emery doesn’t seem like he wants to discuss anything right now. If this happened to me I bet Emery would be loading me with questions but noooo. 

I thought this was going to be a simple and fun vacation to Nevada but apparently I was totally wrong. I now know this was going to be a memorable trip and not in a good way.

“You’re thinking.” 

I jump at Emery’s voice. “Well duh.” I tell him when I cross my hands over my chest and dodge some joggers walking on the sidewalk. 

“Its complicated Cedes,” Emery sighs and stuff his hands in his jean pockets. Today was actually surprisingly chilly out. 

I roll my eyes. “Of course it is.” 

Emery groans. “Just don’t let him come in the hotel room again, alright?” 

“Yes, sir,” I mutter under my breath. 

Emery grabs my hand and pulls me into a quiet shop. “Listen, Cedes its just a lot to explain and its not that I don’t want to explain but its just… difficult and way too much. One story leads to another okay?” I nod even though I still want an explanation but I drop it and walk away from him then look around the small little jewelry shop. I hear Emery’s loud sigh but then he’s walking in step with me as we just look at the what looked like hand made jewelry. The jewelry was pretty epic though, there was all type’s of designs, patterns, and colors in the necklaces and bracelets.  

I remember a couple years ago I got into making jewelry, it was a fun escape. I always wanted to open up a store like this but I was only 15 maybe even 14 at the time. Maybe some time in the future I’ll open up a store, that would make everything perfect. 

“Hey, Cedes Riley and them are at the arcade a block from here, want to come?” Emery questions. I look at him and see the excitement in his face. With a groan I agree because that’s just the nice person I am. I kind of knew I was making the wrong decision but at this point I honestly didn’t care. I’ll do my own thing at the arcade and they can do their own thing. 

I just hope we go clubbing one of these nights, I am in desperate need of getting drunk.
