I made it across the parapet with ease humming my favorite songs to keep me distracted. The rain stopped as I was about halfway but not before soaking me to the bone. After I gave my name to the role keeper on this side, a red-headed third year with a cool ass crossbow, I wait for Liam, I start to fidget a bit as I wait, although fully confident in Liam and his abilities, part of the reason I choose to go first was so that in case of the unthinkable and highly unlikely event of Liam falling I wouldn't have to watch it. He emerges as soon as I push that horrifying picture out of my head, I run over to him and jump on his back.
"Hello cadet Mairi" I say in a mock chivalrous tone
"Hello to you to cadet Kane" he mocks back as I drop off his back. His insanely sculpted and muscular back I think. Gods what is wrong with me. He places his hand on my lower back sending shivers up my spine to guide me slightly in front of him then he drops his head and in a low tone says,
"We stick together ok, no matter what. We don't leave each others sights if we can help it." Eyeing a cadet snarling towards us.
"Got it" I say activity avoiding eye contact with the rabid dog cadet over there.
"Thank the gods you two made it!" A voice shouts before I see a flash of pink hair and a pair of arms fly around me. I return the quick hug from Imogen another one of my foster siblings and the only other girl at the estate before she lets go and hugs Liam. Me and Imogen grew really close over the years, her older sister was executed along with her parents and I never had siblings so we fit right in with each other.
"You ever doubted us?" I say mock hurt lacing my voice
"As if, you two are freakishly good at everything. It's really fucking annoying sometimes you know that."
"Great to see you too Imogen" Liam laughs
"You know I love you both" she admits
"But you tell anybody I said that and you're fucking dead you here me" Imogen says lowering her voice
"Yes ma'am" I salut but she rolls her eyes. Imogen pulls us close and looks around before continuing,
"Listen there are gonna be a lot of people in here who want you dead." She says ominously
"Aren't there always?" Liam interjects
"It's different in here trust me, and the second you two start showing off and acing everything the people who want you dead will double, you have to watch each others backs ok."
She then turns to Liam and says, "And make sure her mouth doesn't land her in unnecessary trouble." Pointing to me
"Hey! I'll have you know I'm a very well-behaved woman." I whine
"Ya and I'm a dragon" Liam says sarcastically as Imogen snorts I turn and smack the back of Liam's head
"Ow! Really" he says shifting his gaze to me but before I can say anything Imogen says,
"Looks like we're about to start, Xaden already made sure you two were in the same squad so you don't have much to worry about, but go line up with the other first years and don't die please.
"No dying, got it." I give her a sarcastic thumbs up before turning and walking away pulling Liam behind me.
"Ya and I'm a dragon meh meh meh." I mock
"Real mature Chlo really." Liam smirks back
"I will hit you...again" I say but he just laughs as we stand in line and commander Pancheck starts his speech.
"301 of you have survived the parapet to become cadets today, good job 67 did not."
"That's way more than average" I whisper, "great start right." And Liam just sighs
I space out for the rest of his speech trusting Liam to get any important information I missed. He finally finishes and hands the microphone off to one of the wing leaders who separates us in to squads and sections. Me and Liam get placed in to Second Squad, Tail Section, Fourth wing.
As we leave the courtyard I turn to Liam, "what is the Sorrengail girl doing here, I thought she was going on to the scribes?" I ask
"I heard her talking to some people in her squad and I think mommy dearest forced her to." He says
"Comforting to know she forcing her own kids in to the quadrant too I guess." I say back, Liam snorts
I almost feel bad for the girl, I mean she looks like one strong gust of wind could've thrown her off the parapet. No one deserves to be forced to go here, even if it is General Sorrengail's daughter.
We somehow make it through battle brief the next day, Duke put us with tutors when we were younger so we already have most of their lies memorized, it was easy enough. Now it's assessment time and I have been itching to punch something. Me and Liam have pretty much kept to ourselves, our squad mates not really interested in being associated with us. The only names I remember are Josephine a short red-head who can't stop making googly eyes at Sam, Sam who can't keep his eyes off my ass, and Ryker a tall curly-haired brunette who has made more than a few comments on our relics.
"I hope I get to fight Sam, it's only been a day and he's already creeping me out." I say to Liam as we walk over to Imogen, Xaden, Garrick, and Bhodi.
"No way he's mine." Liam says with an indecipherable look on his face that makes my stomach flip
"Who's yours?" Bhodi asks catching the end of our conversation.
"Just some creep in our squad who won't stop checking out my ass." I respond while stretching, they all just scoff
"Well I'm hoping to take on Sorrengail over there" I wince and me and Liam share a look, that cannot be a good idea but we know better than to voice that opinion. Professor Emetterio clears his voice to announce the next match,
"Chloe Kane and Ryker Copeland" I smile, this is even better than Sam I cannot wait to take this prick down a peg.
After some good lucks from my group I make my way to the mat with Ryker, I stick my hand out to shake before the match begins just as a curtesy but the jackass knocks it away. A chorus of "oooo's" ensure and I hear a faint "oh shit" from Liam, him knowing me long enough to know what's about to happen. Even Violet and her group are watching the exchange. Emetterio quiets everyone down and I shake out getting ready, Ryker is tall and fairly muscular, but arrogant and slow, that's going to be his downfall, well that and the element of surprise. The professor makes sure we're ready and signals us to fight. As soon as Emetterio leaves the mat I immediately go for Ryker's exposed throat with a quick but effective jab with my left hand before delivering the final blow with my right hand in a one-two motion. My right hand meets his cheek and I immediately feel it split, he falls to the ground unconscious and I open and close my fist to numb the pain coursing through my knuckles.
"Dick" I mutter stepping over his unconscious body before returning over to my group. I'm happy to see all of them with proud smirks in their faces at my performance. I meet Liam first and we do our high-five handshake ignoring all the eyes on me including the peering eyes of Violet Sorrengail.

"That dude had at least a foot and 70 pounds on her and she took him down in 2 punches!" Sawyer gapes
"I think I'm in love" Ridoc stares
I can't blame him if I'm being honest, with her tan skin, gorgeous green eyes, and long honey colored hair I find myself staring as well not just because of her beauty and amazing fighting skill but also cause she's been hanging around Xaden a lot. I know they're not a couple because her and the blond boy act more like that, I wonder how they know each other.
"No way lover boy we are staying far away from her got it." Rhi chastises and I laugh
