Chapter 22: Later

Ten Years Later

I woke up to see Luke in a panic. Our daughter Lacey and our son Alex had their first day of pre-school today, and apparently Luke was trying to get them ready.
"Luke" I said tiredly.
"What?" he turned back at me.
"Why is Alex wearing a Halloween costume?"
"I DON'T KNOW I COULDN'T GET HIM OUT OF IT."

I laughed and hugged Luke good morning. Lacey ran in front of me and I discovered that Luke attempted to put her golden blonde hair into ponytails. One was much higher than the other with random clips scattered throughout her scalp. She wore a 5 Seconds of Summer t-shirt that was way too big for her, with a polka dot jacket, and an un-matching neon pink skirt. Luke clearly dressed both of them.

Lacey looked up at me with her beautiful blue eyes, just like Luke's. She had his eyes, and I could see the excitement in her eyes about starting school. I suddenly noticed white paste on the front of Luke's shirt.

"What happened to you?" I asked.
"Oh. That. I learned that it's very difficult to get the toothbrush in their mouth when they keep squirming." he laughed.

I felt Alex come up behind me and hug the back of my legs. He was wearing a baby sized Nirvana t-shirt with weird red pants.

Luke looked at me, "Hey, at least I got him out of the costume. I dressed them both and fed them all so you could sleep in." he said with a proud smile.

I looked at the kids who both looked like they got ready in the dark, with Luke's terrible taste of style, and back at Luke still smiling at himself. He did all this so I could sleep in. He's so sweet.

I waved goodbye to Luke from the car as Lacey and Alex both gave him a kiss goodbye. As they got into the back seat, Luke shot me a thumbs up, and I started driving to school.

I thought back to what Luke whispered to me in Paris under the Eiffel Tower that night. When I screamed yes with tears of joy streaming down my face. The reference to when he wrote that song about me as teenagers.

"Now I'll always be beside you. No matter what."
