Now that the police are on their way, I'm glad that this is all over, or at least that's what I think. I crawl over to Ace and hug him, just a spontaneous action that he reciprocates.
"See, everything's gonna be ok."
Although his words have the purpose of being reassuring, they just make my blood run cold. This is going a little too well, how long have we been away from the diner for? Did the Boss notice our disappearance? Maybe he's coming to kill us. I must tell Ace my theory, but not in front of this poor dying lady.
"Ace, can you come with me for a second? I have to talk to you."
"Sure".
We walk in the hallway and sit on the steps.
"I have a terrible feeling about this whole story. The Boss, the creepy old man, the police..."
"The Boss and the old man are hiding something, for sure. But the police are on our side."
"I would agree with you but a couple of hours ago I thought the Boss was on our side as well. Look how that turned out."
"You're just scared, I am too. But don't worry, the police will handle it. I'm sure it's all a misunderstanding, maybe The Boss doesn't even have anything to do with this, he was just trying to protect us and the restaurant"
"By ignoring a murder?"
"I never said he was right, just... lets not jump to conclusions"
Oh Ace, innocent Ace. Although I always loved and admired how he only sees the good in people now it's really not helpful.
"Sure, you're probably right." I have to lie, it's easier than trying to convince him. Now I'm on my own.
