"We were what?" I asked in surprise.
"Invited to dinner with our new neighbors." My mother's name is Kaaren, pronounced Karen, I know weird.
"Do we have to go?" Ter complained while he was laying on the couch.
"Yeah why not? It will be fun!" Jurry said with a brightly beaming smile.
"And it will be nice not to have to make dinner for a night." My mom said as she brushed out her long dark curly hair.
Ter groaned and sat up, "I don't want to meet new people."
"Oh come on it won't be that bad." Jurry sat next to Ter, "after all at least we won't be alone."
I laughed at Jurry's cheerfulness.
"Oh and Lin Ms. Berlinder said she had a son in your grade, what was his name?"
"Berlinder?" I thought for a moment then it clicked, Oh no! "Gerak!?" I didn't mean to say it outloud but I did.
"Yes that was it, so you do know him? Good, and remember kids Raven is not like the other places we have been, and they might not know just how much we know." My Mother had told us the stories of Raven, and it was this town I was adopted from.
"Okay everyone let's get ready!" She said happily.
"Right I'm ready, hey Jurry are you ready?" Ter asked standing up from the couch.
"Yeah I'm good to go." Jurry chimed.
"Alright come on let's go shoot some hoops." Ter tossed the ball at Jurry and both boys walked out the door laughing.
"Lindal, I have a question."
"What is it?"
"This Gerak kid, you know him?" My mom sounded kind of cautious and her words were measured and thought out.
"Well sort of I have him in two of my classes and he helped when I was lost, but that doesn't mean I know him" My hand tingled where Gerak had touched it.
"Oh well Ms. Berlinder seemed awfully cheerful, is that how her son acts as well?"
I laughed rather harshly, "Nope!"
My mom was quiet for a moment, "is he cute?" it was the question I knew was coming, but still my face heated up.
"Um well he is not bad but," A pause oh no don't pause say something else! But I couldn't my tongue was numb.
I heard my mom giggle, "I see well then we should really get you ready."
When mom says that it never means good news for me.
"Okay darling, I think I am ready." My mom came out of her bathroom wearing her earrings we had bought her and her hair was down in tight curls.
"Gee it's about time!" Ter laughed with no insult to be found in his big brown eyes, but mom still threw a towel at him.
"Oh shut up you!" She grinned.
"Are we going soon?" Jurry asked curiously, he was still smiling.
"Yeah I'm starving!" Ter chimed and headed to the door.
"Weren't you two just outside?" I asked.
"Yeah but we lost our ball, I think it went into the neighbor's yard." Ter said sadly.
"Or the wolves got it." Jurry said calmly looking out the window.
"Remember we are not supposed to know about Raven's unique qualities, so act surprised when you see the cat talking."
