At the White Acropolis sirens were blaring and the Egg Gunners guarded the gates to his hidden base, but from what? The answer was soon answered as a red blur comes blasting in. The Gunners start firing at the blur and for good reason.

It was Shadow The Hedgehog, former follower of Dr. Eggman and the Ultimate Life Form. He slides past the Egg Gunners and cause a chain reaction of explosions, then proceeds to jump over the main gate. He sees a searchlight turn on and takes cover.
G.U.N. HQ: Transmission from HQ. There's an SOS coming from Dr. Eggman's Base. Our last communication with our agent was 26 hours ago. We expect an immediate rescue, Shadow The Hedgehog.
Shadow: Understood. Initiating the mission now.
Shadow uses his Chaos Control to teleport to another part of the base and begins looking for G.U.N.'s agent, which he could only guess was Rouge The Bat.
Shadow and Rouge meet up at the center of the base, and with a certain artifact in hand.

Rouge: [Holds the artifact to Shadow] Don't you want to know what this is?
Shadow: My assignment was to rescue you, nothing more.
Rouge: Fine. [Shadow crosses arms] With you, it's always business.
The ground begins to shake and more of Eggman's Gunners arrive, determined to stop the two G.U.N. agents from leaving the base.
Rouge: It seems they don't want us to leave.
Shadow: [Scoffs] Let's get this over with.
A new kind of machine jumps down in front of Shadow and Rouge, one that was different from the others.

This was the Egg-Cerberus, and it was Eggman's only means of keeping Shadow and Rouge right where he wanted them.
After stopping Egg-Cerberus, Shadow and Rouge transport out of White Acropolis and appear in the database. The two are now looking at the map of the Old Kingdom of Soleanna.
Rouge: Ah. Soleanna, the city of water. It has a constitutional monarchy, you know. The primary industries are tourism and crafting precision machinery.
Shadow blocks out Rouge's attempt at a conversation and begins tracing his eyes around the room, eventually they land on a painting of Elise.
Rouge: [Looks at painting] The current sovereign is Princess Elise the Third.
Shadow: [Curious] Why does Eggman's base lead to an odd place like this?
Rouge: How should I know? [Pulls out artifact] I just followed my orders and retrieved the item. Anyway, I have a little favor to ask of you. Could you escort me to the G.U.N. rendezvous point?
Shadow: Where's the rendezvous point?
Rouge: [Points to map] It's the ancient castle of Soleanna, in Kingdom Valley.
Shadow ultimately decides to go along with this, knowing just how bad Rouge can get into trouble. They receive their orders and head over to the forest cave, all prepped and ready to go to Kingdom Valley.
