Indistinct chatter filled the auditorium as students clustered in separate groups, awaiting their instructor.
"Aye, what we doing today?" Kūrī asked nonchalantly, leaning back in his seat, his arms folded behind his head.
"Do you ever pay attention?" Sutō smirked.
"Mostly..." Kūrī chuckled.
At Buaisōna, students were only allowed to learn their decreed functions after reaching the "B" tier. Tiers were classificatory divisions within the academies, ranking the occupants' skill levels from I (fundamental awareness) to X (advanced pro) and beyond. Every year, students had to take an annual physical consisting of three sections. Section I: CIPHERING, which tested the physical, neurological, and cardiovascular health of the student. Section II: CHANNELING, determining the student's decreed function(s) by observing them attempt every known function until settling into one or more. Section III: VAULTING, where students attended special training classes based on their function(s) until placed into their operation (militant duties) or occupation (communal duties).
Today was that day.
"OK NOW LISTEN UP!"
Students hurried to their seats as their instructor entered.
Rūno Kenzu [Rank XX; Operation: Special Training] stood at an impressive 6 feet 6 inches. Having graduated from Buaisōna just five years ago, he had become a household name within the district. Most looked up to him as a big brother, while others were afraid to catch his gaze. He was of Hispanic nationality, his voice deep enough to echo underwater. His hair was buzzed, and his facial hair clipped.
"We need to finish up Section I and II of the annual TODAY! Anyone who has finished with I and II can sit tight. Those of you that haven't done Ciphering need to head down to Nurse Katuya's NOW. That means you: Torankusu, Tanaka, Suzuki, Sato, and Nakamura."
Kodomo stood. "See ya!" He winked and threw up a deuce as he headed out the door.
Other students began grabbing their things to head to their assigned destinations as Rūno Kenzu continued with his announcement.
"Channeling is being held in the observatory theater. Your observers will call you down one by one. Kobayashi, Katto, Takahashi, Ito, and Mashita will be the first group."
"Aye, when are you going down to see Katuya?" Sutō asked, leaning over to Kamiwaii in confidence.
"I guess before I head down to complete section II, I have to wait anyway," Kamiwaii shrugged. "I'll see if Rūno will let me head that way."
"Vaulting will be held sometime this week after 'B' tier finishes I and II! Everyone else can start studying for your entry exams!" Rūno Kenzu conducted.
Kamiwaii approached calmly. "Aye Rūno, let me head down to Katuya's real quick?"
Rūno Kenzu smirked as he folded his arms.
"You know I just sent students down there for Ciphering, she might not be able to see you right now, Mashita."
"She'll see me—just let me go, man." Kamiwaii nudged.
Rūno Kenzu's eyes narrowed in suspicion but eventually lowered his guard, unfolding his arms.
"Go, Mashita, hurry back—they'll be calling you soon!"
"Bet!"
Kamiwaii walked back to his seat, then leaned down to ear level with Sutō before saying, "Aye, watch my stuff... I'll be back."
