"Are you really sure that you don't mind?" Matthew asks worried about his friend's reaction as they walk through the school hallways towards the cafeteria.
"Of course not, Jiwoong and I are past it, and I know you've liked him for a long time," Zhanghao says assuring his best friend that there's no problem. "I know that while Jiwoong and I were dating you had feelings for him"
"I know, I just really don't want things to get weird between us" Matthew says nervously and Zhanghao smiles at him.
"It won't, don't worry" Zhanghao says as he puts his arm over Matthew's shoulder and he smiles gratefully.
"I feel bad for doing this to you, you're my bestfriend, I know you guys have broken up and you say you're over it but still" he says looking at the floor and Zhanghao swallows dryly, he knows that Matthew won't try to have something with Jiwoong until he shows him that he's over it.
Zhanghao and Jiwoong dated during the last school year, and were undoubtedly the hit couple of the school. After Jiwoong left school, the couple were still together during the summer but more as friends and when Zhanghao's new school year started, the couple split up.
Zhanghao only became "popular" after he started dating Jiwoong, who was one of the most attractive boys in the school, while Zhanghao was never that popular because he was more introverted and honest, and half the school hates him for dating Jiwoong and for being a bit arrogant when he's not on his best days.
Zhanghao's friend group has always been him, Matthew, Ricky and Taerae, and they've never been that popular, except Ricky, who for some reason everybody knows him.
Jiwoong, on the other hand, always seemed to hang out with his classmates when he was at school, and he was the only one popular in the group because of his beauty and because he took part in the school musicals and his half-brother was part of the golden trio.
The golden trio is the most popular group in the school. It consists of Kim Gyuvin, one of the funniest boys in the school, together with Park Gunwook, another member of the trio, and they are known for being players on the basketball team and for simply being a fantastic trio, full of talent and friendship.
The final member of the trio is Sung Hanbin, the team captain and student council president and the school's best student for three consecutive years, and the boy Zhanghao envies the most.
Hanbin is known as the gentleman of the school and is the dream boy for all the boys and girls. Zhanghao has always compared himself to Hanbin. During these three years he was always second in the school rankings, and the one who was always first was Hanbin.
He's never been able to understand how he manages to do so well, he's one of the best players on the basketball team and the best student in the school, and on top of that he's the president of the student council, which means he has a lot of work to do and still gets a lot of good grades.
Zhanghao has always found Hanbin mysterious, he's always smiling and helping everyone and it seems like his life is perfect in every way. Although he can't stand him, he can't deny that Hanbin is really handsome.
There has always been a certain rivalry between them. Their "friendship" is based on teasing about school grades and quiet glances.
"You don't have to feel bad Matthew" Zhanghao says smiling at his best friend who nods his head.
"I honestly don't think I'm going to start dating Jiwoong, I feel like I'm betraying our-"
"I've already moved on" Zhanghao says annoyed as Matthew is already getting on his nerves with this subject.
"You were hurt by everything that happened between you two, are you-"
"I've already found someone else" Zhanghao says the first thing that comes into his mind, and it's only after seeing Matthew's shocked face that he realizes what he's said, What have I done? he thinks to himself.
"YOU WHAT?" Matthew shouts, attracting the attention of other people at the entrance to the cafeteria, including the golden trio next to them. "Why didn't you tell me?" he asks disappointedly and Zhanghao swallows dryly.
"I- He's not ready for that, it's going to be a bigger shock to make it official because no one would have ever imagined it" Zhanghao says nervously and Matthew looks at him confused.
"Okay I guess, but you could have told me" he says a little annoyed and Zhanghao starts to panic. "But well, I'll respect your time until you tell me who it is" he says smiling and Zhanghao smiles at him with a forced smile.
I only fuck things up, he thinks to himself. How am I going to pretend I'm in a relationship with someone? I need to get someone to help me with this.
He looks around at the people until his gaze falls on someone who, standing next to Matthew, looks at him intensely, but then quickly drops his gaze when he's caught.
Why was Sung Hanbin looking at me like that? he asks himself confused, Could he have heard the talk?
