chapter five; NICKNAMES
25th december 2023
Annie laid in bed the night after Arachne's death. She stared at the ceiling, not knowing what she felt. At first she was happy with herself for being able to talk with Lamina and Treech without having her anxiety kick in. But then Arachne died and the day turned from good to bad. Her brother seemed to grow more irritated by her day by day. But really he was just looking out for her. The door to her bedroom opened slowly in the middle of the night. Aden came in and tiptoed to his side of the room. "You don't have to be quiet." Annie said, scaring Aden.He jumped slightly almost throwing his pajama pants in the air. Not many people understood why the two Lue siblings shared a room. They lived in a mansion after all. "You forgot your bag at the park." Aden said. Annie's stomach dropped. She sat up in her bed arubtly. "Don't worry I took it with me. The district seven girl pointed it out for me. She was actually really cute, even with tear stains and dirty face."
Annie sighed in relief. If she had forgotten the bag she would definitely cry. She had gotten it from her mother. It was one of the last things she had left after her mothers death. Annie was so relieved that she almost didn't notice her brother calling Lamina cute. "Wait— You think Lamina is cute?" she smiled slightly. "Uh— I- I mean yeah, if that's what her name is." he blushed hard.
Annie giggled and fell back in her bed. "I'll let her know," she taunted quietly. "No, no, don't!" he said. Annie shushed him, she didn't want anyone to wake up. "That's embarrassing..." he said quietly afterwards. "No, it's cute!" Annie smiled. "Just... Just don't tell her." Aden sighed getting in his bed. "Fine," Annie gave in, knowing she'll definitely hint her new friend of it.

The tributes were chained to a table. The mentors stood in front, beside their chairs. "In spite of yesterdays tragic events," Highbottom spoke. Annie felt herself look down at the reminder. "Our president has decided that the games must go on. To show everyone that the capitol is unafraid of such acts of terror." he went on.
"To which end Dr. Gaul wishes you to preview the arena this afternoon, with tour tributes." he said. "Later this evening there will be a special televised presentation of each tribute to our audience to you know get to know them."
Treech seemed to tense up at this. "You'll have an hour to discuss strategy." Dean Highbottom had ended his speech. Not anyone said anything to their tributes. Probably afraid of their plans getting leaked due to the echoes. "You may begin." Dean Highbottom said over his shoulder, after swallowing his morphine. Slowly people started whispering, some talked but it was quiet.
"So skills... I know you can juggle but what else? Anything that might come in handy?" Annie asked looking through her form. "I'm good with an axe. And I'd say I'm pretty fast." Annie whispered a 'good' while she wrote down on the paper. "Tell me about your life back in seven. Your family and so on."
"I live with my parents. I got a little sister. She's six. I have a little brother. Who is thirteen. We had a cat. It wasn't exactly ours but it came around our house a lot." Treech smiled at the thought, so did Annie. Annie nodded, encouraging him to go on. "I was working often, chopped wood. But when I didn't work, I usually hung out with friends."
"And what did you use to do with your friends?" Annie asked further. "We played. Hide and seek, tag, sometimes football." he laughed but his eyes were sad. Annie wrote down what he said. "Any relationships? Are you single?" Annie read from the paper. He chuckled. "Why? You wanna see if you got a chance?" he asked jokingly. Annie smiled and rolled her eyes playfully.
"It's on the paper, seven." his eyes quirked up at the nickname. "Seven? A nickname Ann? But no I don't have a girlfriend." he said. "That's good." Annie blushed lightly but hid it by looking down and writing on the paper. "Good?" Treech questioned smirking again.
"Maybe you could use it as an advantage. In the interview, you could charm the capitol girls by saying you're single and... I don't know tell them some jokes? Then hopefully they'll sponsor you so you'll survive because they want to date you." Annie tried to reason hoping he would get the point. He seemed not fully convinced but he said he was willing to try at least.
Their conversation quiet down and Annie looked next to them to see Lamina crying. Pup looked at Annie desperately. He didn't know what to do. Annie wasn't sure either. "Comfort her." Annie mouthed to him, looking unsure herself. Somewhere else in the room Annie spotted her brother. He stood in uniform watching Lamina. His eyes softened by the sight of the crying girl.
"So uhm... Are you willing to do that?" Annie asked Treech, snapping him back from zoning out. "Charm the capitol girls by saying I'm single? I'll try but right now I'm not looking exactly extremely attractive." he said motioning to his dirtied clothes and face. "I'll help you with that." Treech stared at his mentor confused. "Before the interviews and you are waiting for your turn, we tell my brother you need to use the toilet before the show. Then I'll help you then." Treech seemed even more confused. He was about to question it but the time was up. They're all now getting taken to the arena.

A little shorter than usual but I think that's fine! The reason Treech was confused is because Annie hasn't told anyone yet that her brother is a peacekeeper :) Ahhh, I'm still not sure if the end is gonna be sad or not yet!
