⚠️TW: Abuse⚠️It was dark out, but Annie had to see Treech. An hour after she arrived back home with Pup, she got ready to sneak out. She changed out of her fancy dress and into a something more comfortable instead. Then she found him some food. Her family were already sleeping so Annie had to be as quiet as possible. Kazuo, her father, is a light sleeper after all. She tiptoed her way out. The girl shuddered at the cold wind blowing at her. Her black hair flew all around. She grabbed it all and put it down in her jackets hood, making it stay in place.
When reaching the zoo Annie noticed she wasn't the only mentor to meet their tribute. Coriolanus stood close to Lucy Gray. He turned at the sound of footsteps. The light showed glimpses of tears in Lucy Gray's eyes. Annie smiled sympathetically and went over to the side where Treech used to stay at. Lamina and Treech sat on their each side of the rock. They seemed to be both asleep.
"Treech," Annie called out quietly. She didn't want to wake up anyone else. The boy stirred in his sleep but didn't wake up. "Treech." she called out again, this time, she grabbed a stick from the ground before throwing it on his leg. His eyes opened and saw Annie standing there. He got up while rubbing his eyes. His hat almost fell but he grabbed it just in time. Annie went to sit down in front of the bars. It being the only thing to separate the two. Her hand reached for the food before giving it to Treech. He went right in, his nerves had made him hungry. They were both silent. Coriolanus had left soon after Annie arrived. Treech's hands were shaking. He felt like he was about to cry, but he stopped himself. He didn't want to die. He couldn't.
Back home he got a family that is waiting for him. He wondered how they were doing. "Please don't let me die tomorrow." he spoke up after swallowing his food. Annie raised her gaze and looked straight at him. "I promise you, I will do my best," she assured. "Just be smart."
"I always am," Treech chuckled jokingly. Annie grinned brightly. For Treech it seemed like she had somehow managed to light up the entire world now. The smile she always smiled was incredibly comforting. He knew he'd miss it. "But be careful around Coral. I have a feeling she won't hesitate to kill you if you piss her off." Annie warned. She already knew that the girl from four is ruthless. "And don't hurt Mizzen. If you do then I will kill you," she ended off with a serious look but Treech could tell she was joking. He knew her that well.
He swallowed his last piece of food before grabbing Annie's hands through the bars. Neither of them said anything. They were both lost in thought. "I don't want to lose you Treech." Annie spoke up. A tear fell down her cheek. She was quick to let go off his hand to wipe it away. She felt pathetic for crying. It's not like it's her that is going to fight for her life in the arena tomorrow.
Treech took her hand in his again before they both leaned their foreheads to each other. "Hopefully you won't." Now he was crying too. The wind quietened their sobs. They sat there for long until their eyes were dry. When Annie had to leave back home Treech stopped her. "Take care of my hat will you?" Treech lifted it off his head, placing it in her arms. He made her think it was for her to take care of, but really he just wanted her to keep something to remind her of him after his death in the arena.
Annie nodded and ran back home. The boy stood glued to the ground. Finally, he was sure of his feelings for the girl. He really do like her. And he wished she could've known. His hand held the bars. Watching his crush run away. Even when he thought the tears were done, they came back. Everything was falling apart for him. He knew he had to get out his feelings before tomorrow. He didn't want to have a breakdown then, in the arena.
The girl holding the hat, ran home. Her tears dried to her cheeks. Her lungs tightened and she felt the exhaustion hit. All from sadness, tiredness, and the running. Her eyes were glued to the hat now, while walking home slower than before. Memories flooded back in her head. From when the two first met. It was on the train. She knew she liked him. On the first meeting, her stomach was filled with butterflies. It still does the moment she sees him. Annie opened the front door, forgetting to be quiet due to her mind being filled with everything else.
Her eyes widened at her father's voice. "Where have you been?" he demanded to know. "I— I was at t—the zoo..." her voice shook. His feet stormed towards her. Annie felt herself backing up until her back hit the wall. Suddenly Kazuo stopped in front of his daughter. Annie prepared for the hit. Her eyes shutting together. She waited and waited. It wasn't until she opened her eyes that the smack echoed through the quiet mansion. A stinging stuck to her cheek as her father turned around mumbling something.
Annie didn't realize at first that it was insults, meant to the girl. For a second she thought he was done. But then he turned back to her. His nostrils flared. "And what did you do at the zoo, huh? Meeting your dirty district boy?" he yelled in her face. His hand reached to hit her. This time it wasn't a slap. He punched her in the nose. Blood started dripping, slowly, as he repeatedly hit her. Annie didn't react much. Which angered Kazuo even more, who wanted the girl to cry and beg for him to stop. Annie slid down the door, which gave Kazuo the perfect opportunity to kick her.
Annie remembered their time in the district. The hitting didn't start until her mother's disappearance. One time so had Kazuo cut open Aden's leg with a broken alcohol bottle. He still got the scar. Soon Aden emerged from his room. He noticed his sister and father in the hallway. "Stop!" he demanded running towards them. He raised his knee just in time to knock Kazuo down and into the wall. Darlene entered soon later and saw the bloodied girl on the floor. Darlene had never seen this side of her husband. She had frozen in the spot, unsure what to do.
Aden lifted his sister before taking her to their room. That's what he used to do in the district. She was small then, easy for him to hold. Now it was more difficult but he has become stronger so it was still possible for him. While Kazuo laid in the hallway, his kids were in their bedroom. Aden hugging Annie tightly, comforting her. But right now she didn't need it. She just wanted to be somewhere alone. Though Annie knew that wasn't possible, definitely not after an event like this. Even though she could feel pain, it still felt like all was just a bad dream.
