An: changed Madeline's age to 16
SATURDAY
Logan walks in my room and taps my shoulder. I pull out my earphones and look up at her. "It's Madeline's birthday tomorrow so we're making her a cake, can you drive me and Olivia to the store?"
"Its her birthday?" I ask.
"Yeah, tomorrow, so can you drive us?" Logan asks again impatiently.
Do I need to get her a gift? I should right? Or does that say too much? What do I get her? "Sure, let's go."
I grab my keys and slide on my shoes and we head out to the car. The minute I start the engine Olivia says, "Hey Quinn, when are you going to ask Madeline out?"
I almost reverse into the stone wall. "Logan!"
"Hey, I said I wouldn't tell Mads. I never said I wouldn't tell Olivia." Logan defends.
"I'm a matchmaker, I can definitely find out if she likes you." Olivia says.
"We're not in middle school you know. I can ask her myself." I say way too quickly and very unconvincingly.
"Okay, so why haven't you?"
I pull out of the street and focus on the road. "Well- Just- It's not that easy. Who else knows about this anyway?"
"Just Liv," Logan says. "And Rowan and Phoebe."
I roll my eyes and shift gear to park. "Just don't tell anyone else."
Logan and Olivia head into the shop. There's a few other shops at the retail park so I get out of the car and lock it behind me. I walk to the first ship and start looking until I realise I have no fucking idea what Madeline likes. I know she likes books but I don't know what she wants. I look around a little longer before going into the jewellery store next door. Immediately I'm surrounded by about twenty cases with different jewellery everywhere.
"Hello lovely, can I help you out?" An employee asks me, eyeing my nervous state.
"Well, so- I'm looking for something to get for my neighbours birthday tomorrow and I'm not sure what she'd like." I say, standing there like a bull in a china shop.
"How old is she turning?" She asks.
"Seventeen."
"Okay, well what jewellery does she wear?"
"Mostly necklaces, sometimes rings." I reply.
"I think I have some ideas for you to look at, follow me." She starts towards the necklaces and leads me to a case in the corner.
"Have a look and just come to the front desk if you find anything. Good luck." She smiles and walks away.
I look at the necklaces, some are good but out of my price range and some aren't Madeline. My eyes land on a dainty silver necklace with a small book charm. It's perfect, it's Madeline, it's even in my price range and- shit, it's going to be painfully obvious that I like her. I drum my fingers lightly on the wood leg of the case, contemplating what to do. I don't want to freak her out or what if she doesn't like it? Fuck that, I'm buying it. I go to the front desk and the employee from before unlocks the case and takes out the necklace. I pay at the checkout and she wraps it up in a blue box with a bow.
Once I leave the store I let out a breath I hadn't realised I'd been holding. I walk back to the car, where thankfully Logan and Olivia aren't back yet.
