As the sun dipped below the horizon casting long shadows across the landscape— the world around them went still. The two girls sat there in awe as their eyes witnessed the sky becoming a canvas ablaze with hues of amber and lavender.

Chocolate brown eyes clashed with blue-green irises. Smiles broke out on their faces. "Do you think the colour of the sky matches with my dress?" The twelve year old pushed the swing backward and started swinging.

"It does." Came a soft reply. The Back and forth movement of the swings echoed in the empty playground.

"Do you think the angels can listen to us?" That was very random. Then again, their conversations were always like that.

"Nani says they can. And that they're always with us."

Her chocolate brown eyes gleamed with delight. "I wonder how they look like."

"Nani says that in the Quran it's mentioned that they've wings. And that they're huge in size. The largest amongst them are those who carry Allah's throne. Jibreel Alaihis Salam has six hundred wings!"

"Whoa! I wish I could see them!"

"Me too." Her blue-green irises gazed up at the sky. When she had returned home after finishing her second semester, nani had cooked biryani. And as they had sat under the blue sky with her on Nani's lap, she had learnt about angels in Islam.

"I wish I had a nani to tell me all these things."

"You have me." Her dimpled cheeks accentuated her smile.

"Promise me?" she lifted her hand and raised her pinky finger. "We'll always be friends and you shall never replace me!"

A giggle escaped her lips. "I promise."

The bell rang—putting an end to the morning classes and bringing her back to reality. She raised her pinky finger and gazed at it. Her eyes glazed over for a second or two.

Is it so easy to break a promise? The ache in her chest started growing. Then why make promises when you can't keep them? Why give hope when you're going to betray in the end?

"Alright girls! This will be your homework. I want you to read the first chapter and write down your thoughts." Mrs Townsend smiled at all of them.

Her eyes fell on the book lying on her desk. To kill a mockingbird. She traced the letters with her forefinger.

Mrs Townsend loved to 'Venture out a bit'. Instead of sticking to the syllabus all the time she liked to engage her students. And this was one way of doing it. She'd give them books to read and would ask them to write their thoughts. It was safe to say that this was something Lina was going to enjoy a lot.

"Lina!" A voice called as the students started to leave.

She turned around and faced the girl. "Hi Sakura." A soft smile graced her lips.
