Brittany sat across from Santana, watching her chew on breadsticks with an uncharacteristic frown. Santana, sensing something was amiss, eventually put the breadsticks down and asked, "What's wrong?"
Brittany sighed, hesitating before saying, "You know how quickly gossip can spread, right?"
Santana frowned and nodded, "Yeah?"
Brittany continued, "Let's say, if you were talking about me being bi and being Kurt's beard during break, it would spread to my school by 5th period."
Santana's eyes widened, "Wait, what?"
Brittany hummed, looking uncomfortable, "Isn't that just weird?"
Santana, now concerned, asked, "So, people know?"
Brittany looked at Santana, her expression heavy, and said, "They don't know they think, but I said I'm straight, and what happened yesterday wasn't a date."
Santana was incredulous, "Seriously?"
Brittany nodded, "Despite me denying it, I've still been called a fag and dyke by people I've never seen or talked to my entire life."
Santana, frustrated, uttered, "What the fuck."
Brittany shrugged, fiddling with a napkin, and continued, "Imagine if my parents heard about their daughter being a fag."
Santana frowned, "What would happen?"
Brittany admitted, "My dad will hate me more than he already does and try to get my mom to disown me or some shit."
Santana was taken aback, "Seriously?"
Brittany nodded, "Yeah, seriously. That's why I'm still in the closet, well... I guess not anymore."
Santana asked, concerned, "So, what are you going to do?"
Brittany sighed, "I have to make people think I'm not gay."
Santana pondered for a moment before saying, "How are you going to do that?"
Brittany frowned, growing frustrated, "I don't know, kiss a guy? Have sex with him?"
Santana shook her head, "That won't work."
Brittany, looking distressed, asked, "What do you mean?"
Santana replied, "People think you're bi, and they're definitely not dumb enough to not know what it means."
Brittany rubbed her forehead, overwhelmed, and quietly said, "What do I do, then?"
A hour later she walked into her dorm room, dropped her bag to the ground, and absentmindedly checked her messages. The sight of numerous missed calls from her dad made her heart quicken. Anxiety coiled in her chest as she dialed his number, and he answered almost immediately.
"Hi da-" she began, but before she could finish, he cut in, practically growling, "Is it true?"
Swallowing hard, Brittany stammered, "No, it's not."
Her dad scoffed, and Brittany felt the color drain from her face. He said, "I saw JBI's post."
Brittany frowned, panic settling in, and asked, "How?"
"He publishes on Facebook now for parents to see," her dad replied. Brittany felt a wave of nausea as he continued, "And I just saw that you were on another date with a girl called Santana Lopez."
Tears welled up in Brittany's eyes as she insisted, "I wasn't on a date."
Her dad let out a bitter laugh, his tone growing colder, "I'm not as dumb as you luckily, I can tell when you are lying to me."
Brittany opened her mouth to explain, to plead, but her dad interrupted with finality, "I'm not having a fag for a daughter."
Her breath caught in her throat as he said, "Goodbye."
The line went dead, leaving Brittany standing in the silence of her dorm room, the weight of her dad's disapproval settling heavily on her shoulders. She felt a mix of emotions—betrayal, fear, and an overwhelming sense of loss. In that moment, the room seemed to close in on her, and Brittany struggled to comprehend the consequences of being her authentic self in a world that wasn't ready to accept it.
Brittany sobbed uncontrollably into Kurt's shoulder, seeking solace in his comforting presence. He rubbed her back soothingly, whispering, "It's going to be fine." However, something within Brittany snapped, and she abruptly moved away from him, her tear-streaked face filled with anguish.
"It's not going to be fine, Kurt!" she yelled, her voice choked with pain. His eyes widened, but Brittany squeezed hers shut, continuing her outburst, "My dad fucking disowned me because I had coffee and lunch with a girl I barely know."
Kurt watched in shock as Brittany grabbed her hair, her frustration pouring out. She exclaimed, "Ever since I talked to her, my whole life went to shit. How is that possible over one of the most kindest girls I've ever met?"
Brittany rested her head against Kurt's door, sobbing, and questioned, "Why does it matter if I'm fucking gay?" Kurt hesitated before standing up, slowly walking to her, and softly saying, "It doesn't."
Brittany spun around, glaring at him, and spat, "If it doesn't, why do I now only have one parent? If it doesn't matter, why am I getting dirty looks from people I don't even know?"
Kurt stared at Brittany, her emotions flaring as she paced around, arms gesturing wildly. She continued, "I wouldn't have even looked at Santana if I knew this would happen."
Brittany finally put her back against the wall, sliding down, her arms covering her face as she rested them on her knees just above her chin. Repeating, "I'm so fucking stupid."
Kurt sat next to her, pulling her into his lap. Brittany resisted, hitting his shoulders and pushing him, but he held on tighter, whispering into her hair, "I love you."
