Bunny shook his foot and tried his best to ignore the cold biting at his legs as the snow continued to get deeper. He was going to kill the bloody show-pony when he found him. First, he leaves the North Pole without telling North where he's going and then creates an entire blizzard in Burgess. North called the meeting to go and find Jack. At first, the Guardians assumed he would be playing with Jamie and his friends like always. That was until the blizzard picked up it's speed and no child showed their faces outside in the cold.
"Jack!" Bunny called out and hopped onto a semi-dry spot in the grass so his feet weren't in the snow. "You got a lot of explaining to do, mate!"
"Bunny," Tooth scolded. "He could be in trouble."
"Yeah," Bunny agreed sarcastically. "Causing trouble."
Bunny caught sight of an annoyed Sandy who showed a couple images of Jack, his staff, and the staff being broken. Why would Jack's staff be broken?
"Sandy has good idea," North said, walking over to them. Both of his swords were drawn. "Jack's staff is where power comes from, no? If Jack didn't cause the storm, maybe he lost control of his staff."
Bunny shook his head slowly. "Jack's staff has never been broken before. We can't assume that's what would happen if it did break."
Sandy made a question mark over his head as he shrugged. Bunny could barely make out the gold sand in the amount of snow falling.
"I don't know what's going on either, mate," Bunny said with a sigh.
"Guys?" Tooth called from a little further down the path they were taking in the woods. Jack had not been in the village, so they decided to check the woods.
Bunny glanced at North and Sandy before hopping into the direction Tooth had called them in. By the tone of her voice, she had found something. And it wasn't good.
When Bunny found her hovering a few inches off the ground in front of a frozen lake, he saw both of her hands were covering her mouth in shock. Tooth's purple eyes were dead ahead of her, wide with fear. But when Bunny looked in the direction her eyes gazed at, at first all he saw was the lake. He'd seen the lake a couple times in his life as a Guardian. All of those times, Jack had been here. Bunny never knew why Jack loved this lake so much. Maybe because it was constantly frozen.
"What is it?" Bunny asked the stunned Tooth.
Without warning, Tooth flew over to the far end of the lake in a blink of an eye. Leaving Bunny standing cold in the snow with no other choice but to follow her. North and Sandy were just catching up as Bunny stepped onto the ice, afraid of how stable it would be. He could see Tooth bending over something a little ways away from him. Bunny had a bad feeling he knew who it was...
As Bunny ran over on all fours to Tooth, he was surprised how thick the ice was. Nothing cracked or groaned. Not even when North hopped onto the ice with a large thump. (Sandy was simply floating.)
That's when Bunny saw what all the fuss was about. Jack was laying on his back at the edge of the frozen lake with his staff a good five feet away from him. The Winter Spirit was unconscious and Bunny could hear his labored breathing just barely over the biting wind.
"What happened to him?" Tooth asked in a whisper, her hand on Jack's. She looked up at Bunny with tears in her eyes. "Who did this to him?"
"We'll figure this out," Bunny said and turned to North. "We need to get him to the slay."
