"Who did this to you?" Tooth nearly screamed as soon as she flew into the room. Both her fists were clenched at her side and making her knuckles turn white. Jack was surprised when a little fairy came bolting through the door right after her, flying over to Jack and chirping with angry eyes.
"Nice to see you too, Baby Tooth," Jack chuckled.
"I asked you a question!" Tooth yelled and crossed her arms.
North came through the door next, followed by Sandy and Bunny.
"We are curious as to what happened," North admitted, both hands on his hips. "And I should be scolding you for leaving the North Pole before telling where you were going. You missed meeting!"
Jack let a nervous smile spread on his face. "Yeah...I forgot about the meeting. And I was just heading over to Burgess for a little at the lake I di-" Jack stopped himself. Wow, he almost let that slip.
"The lake you what, mate?" Bunny asked in a low worried tone.
"The lake I hang out at," Jack corrected. None of the Guardians looked convinced. Jack didn't want the pity he knew would come if he told them about his past. He didn't want that. He didn't need it. 300 years could do that to a person.
Sandy stepped forward and flashed multiple pictures over his head faster than Jack could comprehend.
"Uh, sorry, I don't know what any of that means," Jack confessed with a laugh but winced when his lungs hit his rib.
"He asked what happened," Bunny translated. "I think."
Sandy nodded in confirmation.
"When I got to the lake," Jack started. He hadn't noticed how raspy his voice was. "I started to hear my name being called. I knew it was familiar, but I couldn't place the name. Then I started to see things at the edge of the lake. Shadows. And that's when Pitch came."
The air tensed at the name.
"I didn't think he'd be back so soon," Jack continued. "But he's stronger than before somehow...he was able to pin me down but disappeared when you guys showed up." After he was done talking, he couldn't read the Guardian's faces. For a second, he was scared they thought of him as weak. Maybe they'd kick him out and make him resign from being a Guardian.
"They don't care about you, you know?" Pitch's words echoed through his head.
Bunny must have seen Jack's face. "What's wrong, Frostbite?"
Jack shook his head. "I'm sorry for letting him get away. I should have stopped him. And now that he's back, he will endanger the kids now."
The look on all the Guardian's faces was between confusion and shock.
There. Jack thought to himself. If they didn't see me as a failure before, they do now.
Tooth opened her mouth to talk but was interrupted when the workshop suddenly shook with a bang from the outside. Everyone got into a defense stance. Everyone other than Jack who sat up quickly and let out a yelp before covering his injured rib with his arm. He grit his teeth painfully together.
"Something's here," North said with anger in his eyes.
Tooth looked at them with worry when another bang shook the entire workshop again.
One of the yetis ran inside the infirmary and shouted something urgently to North who nodded and pulled out his swords.
"Pitch," he hissed and left the room.
