Chapter 29 - Friendship or safety?

(Joe's POV)
I knelt down beside Ellie, her body limp, her neck surrounded in blood.
"Ellie?" I whispered, putting my arm underneath her shoulder blades, wincing at the sharp glass.
"Mhm?" She mumbled.
"I'm going to have to lift you up." I got into position, ignoring the glass pressing hard against my knuckles.
She nodded, and then I carefully lifted her onto the sofa.
She had no expression, but a tear ran down her cheek.
"Caspar?" She whispered.
I gritted my teeth. Why was she talking about Caspar?
"Caspar doesen't matter. He's never even coming back here again." I told her.
"No!" she sat up, much to my surprise, "Caspar's drunk! He's going to get himself killed!" She was shouting at me in her anguish.
"Shh, shh he'll be okay." even though I knew Ellie was right.
"Ellie? You're injured. I'm going to take you to the hospital." I said.
"But Caspar will get into trouble!" She said.
"Honey, Caspar can't get away with this," I was straight with her, "I'm going to get you better okay?"
She nodded, and out her arms round my neck despite the pain she was in.
I carried her out of the house and into the cold air. I picked up my phone.
"Can we have an ambulance please? We have had an um...an accident." Joe spoke.
"I'm sorry, but our ambulances are currently somewhere else. I apologise. But come to A&E and we will sort out the casualty." Said a posh sounding lady.
"We can't come. Our car is out of petrol and she is in a lot of pain. Please." I said, pleading.
"Okay, let me just check that's we can get one available."
Once we had sorted out the ambulance, I tried my best to keep Ellie calm and pick out the bigger pieces of glass form her body. I cried as she winced.
"Ellie you're going to be okay." I whispered.
She nodded and smiled weakly.
The ambulance arrived and took Ellie onto a stretcher. I climbed into the back of the ambulance and we set off the nearest hospital. Fingers crossed, Ellie was going to be fine.
