Dear Diary,
Kou-kun visited me again today. He came alone this time, but promised next time he's going to bring Tiara-chan along. He says she is thinking about me; he's probably only saying that to make me feel happy. I appreciate the thought, just a bit.
We both sat in silence for a few minutes after he arrived. I could tell he was thinking carefully what to say. I couldn't stand it, so I asked him to tell me about something that was troubling him.
I expected him to answer, "Oh, nothing! I'm a little stressed about school, but that's it!" or "I'm just a bit tired, is all."
Instead he told me a story about a boy named Mitsuba Sousuke who was in his first-year junior high class. Kou-kun told me about how this Mitsuba was girly, loud, prideful, and annoying.
He told me that Mitsuba Sousuke died one winter on his way to the store, and about almost everybody including Kou-kun himself, forgetting about the boy.
Then Kou-kun told me that he has been seeing him again recently. I didn't understand what he meant, but perhaps it relates to all of the "ghosts" and "supernaturals" he is always talking about.
I have never understood the lasting sadness after loss. I have never had to go through something like that. But I know Kou-kun has.
Once Tiara-chan told me they lost their mother when she was a baby. That means Kou-kun must have been very young too.
I hope if I die Kou-kun and everyone won't grieve me. I don't want to be a burden.
Even after the story about Mitsuba Sousuke, which clearly made Kou-kun sad, and after the look on his face seeing me sitting in this hospital bed, he left with a smile.
Kou-kun smiles even if he is not happy.
It causes a small pang in my chest when I remember he is only fourteen.
Love, Nene
