The air around me was cold—harsh, even. It felt like someone had cranked up the volume on a megaphone and was shouting the saga of my dark, painful past straight into my ears. I was sipping my coffee in the study, which boasts a giant window that I use as my personal stargazing lounge. It's my escape, my sanctuary, where I can let the stars and moon serenade my exhausted soul.

As I let out a long sigh, basking in the tranquility, I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. I looked up and was met with my mother's soft gaze. Her eyes, always filled with love and care, had a knack for making everything seem a bit brighter. I didn't need to say anything. I just slid onto the sofa, resting my head in her lap, and let her fingers weave through my hair.

I adore my family. Sure, the past has been a tumultuous rollercoaster, but for them, I've worked hard to heal—not just to put on a brave face, but because their happiness means everything to me. I used to be the life of the party, the jolly joker of the gang, and though I still crack a smile for them, it's just that my humor is now reserved for family. I can't stand to see them unhappy, not even for a second.

As for the rest of the world? Well, I've seen its cruel side up close. If people don't like me, I couldn't care less. I wasn't born to be anyone's entertainment. Love? That's a different story. After the mess I've been through, I'm not about to stumble down that path again. I had to give that egoistic man a one-way ticket out of my life. Seriously, he couldn't handle a single slap and thought he could manage me for a lifetime. What a delusion! That guy, well, let's just say he's a special kind of awful.

"Ma, I'm heading to the hospital. See you in the evening."

"Wait," she said, "I'll come with you."

I groaned inwardly but managed a smile. Once in my office, Mom wasted no time. "How did you get here? Did something happen?"

"No, no, everything's fine," she reassured me. "I just came to talk about your marriage. It's high time you start thinking about it. I know it's hard to let go of the past, but you can't spend your whole life alone. You need someone who will be there for you, to share your life with. Please, just give it a chance—for us, if not for yourself."

"Mom, please don't cry. Here, have some water. Okay, I'll give it a shot. But if I don't like it, you can't force me again."

Back home, my sister and I indulged in our nightly ritual—ice cream. We're practically chocolate connoisseurs, with a soft spot for dark chocolate. It's our thing. When we have chocolate, we revert to our inner kids, with more enthusiasm than you'd think possible for grown-ups. She knows everything about me, from my ex to my secrets. I trust her implicitly, so much so that everyone else in the world feels like a shadow compared to her.

At 2 a.m., as I was buried in my books, Mom burst into my room, practically radiating excitement. She had something to say that felt like it could jolt me out of my bed. And judging by her grin, it was going to be one heck of a ride.
