Muffled voices filled the background as Ehi struggled to stay conscious.

"She will be fine, your grace, she only requires plenty of rest".

"I beg to take my leave now."
"Do send for me if anything comes up", the strange voice rushed out.

With warmth seeping from where the Duke gripped her hands tightly, she attempted to open her eyes, but it proved futile as she once again succumbed to darkness.

It was past noon when the horror of another nightmare sprung her awake.

She glanced around, her breathing erratic as she checked for signs of danger.
Laying back down, she spotted lady Constantine sitting on a chair in the far corner by the dresser with her brows pulled in a frown, her mouth in a thin line, and her shoulders sagged as she stared quietly at Ehi.

The tension in the room began to crack at her patience as she stared back. She waited for an explanation or perhaps a tangible reason before she ran mad with rage.

"Why", she croaked, not willing to wait a second longer.

Not getting an answer, ehi continued

"You knew, didn't you, your grace"?

"You knew he was responsible for the slave
trade in this region?"

"You knew and yet y....-ou", she stuttered, enraged from the sting of betrayal that struck at her heart.

"I thought it seemed suspicious when you agreed to this wedding, I was just too blinded by the trust to make up anything from it".
"Do you have any idea what you have done, your grace?".

"It needed to be done, dear one, it was either you or someone else. I very much prefer you to get the job done", lady Constantine muttered.

"Believe me, this was one of the hardest decisions, but you do not make history by playing by the rules".

"The line between right and wrong blurred a long time ago".

"If our enemies spare no thoughts in getting their hands dirty, so can we"?

"Please understand this, my dear, it is the only way we win," she stated unapologetically.

"No, your grace".
"This time, you went too far".

"That man out there is the reason I am here in the first place".
"He wreaked so much havoc, nightmares of him make my blood shriek in utter terror".

He kidnapped, enslaved, killed, and abused i and my people".
"He is the mastermind behind all of this," she yelled painfully.

Tears blurred her eyesight as she whispered,
"He is the reason I am so broken, but I guess you knew this already".

"You may be hurt right now, but in time you will understand", lady Constantine stated gruffly.

"Understand what?".
"The grand plan", ehi mocked.
"If I was such a huge piece of the puzzle, why was I the only one kept in the dark?"

"Why did you let me believe I could be genuinely happy?
That all this, she gestured around her, the Duke, the title, the ball, the wedding, wasn't a part of our grand scheme, she bawled.

"Why didn't you tell me before sending me blindly into the wolf's den in exchange for Lord knows what".

Taking a deep breath, she asked.
"The Duke, is he involved in this"?
"Does he know he is related to a monster"?
Philanthropist be damned!!!.
How did she not see through the lies?

"We are not entirely sure", the lady shrugged.
Ehi waited for her to say more, but it seemed like that was all willing to say.
She groaned loudly in frustration.

"Lord help me", she groaned.
Your grace, if you do not lay all your cards on the table, I might go on a rampage".

"You do not know the extent of the damage you have caused".
"I deserve the damn truth!!!",ehi yelled furiously.

"Manners, young lady", the lady scolded.
"Now, I would warn you, once I tell you all, there is to know, there is no going back".

Ehi glanced at her wedding band, noting she was far too gone to return, she nodded.

Finally concurring, lady Constantine heaved a deep sigh and started.

NOTE
Chapters will be shorter from now on, please bear with me😁.
I know you all hate me for this, but I promise the suspense will be over soon (maybe 😈)
I know you all have questions like:
1. Why hasn't the Duke mentioned anything about seeing Ehi's raid mask?
2. Is the Duke in cohorts with his uncle?
3. Will the General recognize Hi?
4. What could be so important that Lady Constantine had to manipulate Ehi into marrying into the home of her mortal enemy?
5. Is Lady Constantine the bad guy?
Drop your comments, I would like to know what you think.
