HARRY

LXXXVII

He had tried not to think about it.

About what he had said too sincerely without considering the consequences. That was what he did best and worst at the same time. Because he noticed a certain strange air whenever he met with Cedric.

Because in part he was expecting it.

“About what we talked about the other day…”

Harry looked up at him, not moving his leg from his. “What thing?” he asked quietly, even though he already knew.

Cedric's hand on his knee didn't lessen his nervousness.

“What you said about… breaking up at some point…”

"That's not exactly what I said," Harry admitted. In that case he would remember it, especially since he couldn't link that word with his boyfriend. “I think I said it would be the safest thing to do. You must agree with that. Whoever is next to me when the war starts will be at greater risk.”

Cedric couldn't deny it.

“What about your friends?”

Being asked about Ron and Hermione baffled him. "I wouldn't want anything to happen to them either," he answered slowly.

“Harry…”

“We don't know how much time is left.”

In some strange way, the idea that was still time comforted him.

"If they want to be by your side, it's their decision, and I think you know that's how it will be," Cedric spoke, turning his head to look at him with attention and soft eyes. “I've been feeling insecure these past days thinking about what if... if one of these days you decide that what we have is over and when that will be. If after the third task… Or next year. If you will make the decision unilaterally when things get complicated and say it’s for my own safety.”

He had done it.

Even though he was afraid to resume the conversation.

Even though sadness filled him with anticipation.

Cedric was already carrying the uncertainty of whether he would survive that day.

He didn't want to add an expiration date to their relationship.

All he wanted was for it to be a misunderstanding.

None of the words he would’ve wanted to hear came from Harry.

Instead, all he responded was, “I understand.”

Cedric's eyes burned.

Was that all he would say?

"It's not fair to you," Harry continued, "because I'm not sure I can promise anything."

He intended to insist on at least a present…

What was the point of loving him more and more if he would break his heart in the end?

HARRY

"I... I don't know what to say, Harry."

He noticed the shine in Cedric's eyes and although it hurt, Harry couldn't cry.
