HARRY

CLXXX

When he came to his senses, one of the last things he wanted happened.

Madam Pomfrey discharged him.

“You were fit to return to your dorm last night,” she explained. Sirius and Remus, present on either side, expressed no surprise at this. That was what they must have been talking about when Harry woke up and interrupted them. “You can sleep in your own bed today. We both know the ones here aren’t very comfortable.”

Harry rubbed his eyes.

For the first time, it wasn't what he wanted to hear.

“They're not that awful. Can I... can I stay one more night?”

He felt the compassion of all three.

Still, Madam Pomfrey didn't allow it.

Even Moody had been discharged and she no longer had medical reasons to keep him there.

“I know you'd like to stay, Pup. You can visit Cedric tomorrow.”

Harry didn't answer.

He put on his shoes and they walked out the hospital wing's door.

“It’s almost time for dinner,” Remus commented in the corridors. “How about we eat with you? I doubt Dumbledore would have a problem with that.”

“I'm not hungry.”

The road was deserted, for which he was grateful.

“I am,” Sirius chirped cheerfully, hugging Harry by the shoulders. “Remus is a wonderful cook, but elves do some culinary magic I’ve never been able to understand. Come on, let’s have dinner together as a family.”

Harry sighed heavily. “I don't feel like going to the Great Hall.”

Where all the people would be except…

“Let’s raid the kitchen then,” Sirius reached out to Remus. “Just like old times. How about that, Harry?”

It took them a few minutes to conclude that it had been a bad decision.

The elves were bustling with work, and even though Dobby had set a table for them, the hectic pace and constant sobbing filled the air.

Winky wailed as each ready-made dish disappeared with the snap of her fingers.

Dobby took breaks to comfort her and to serve them.

He remained in a considerably good mood despite the circumstances.

"What happened to…?" Harry asked quietly, trying not to be heard.

"Sir, you not know?" Dobby's eyes widened.

“Know what?” He turned to Sirius, who was wiping his mouth with a napkin, and Remus, who had a grimace on his face.

“Barty…” Sirius whispered. “He…”

Winky must have heard the name, because she came over quickly.

“Are you talking about…?” She burst into tears.

Dobby offered her a handkerchief.

“Winky is an orphan,” she hiccupped, which confused Harry for a moment. “Doesn't have masters. Won't have masters anymore… Wasn't able to say goodbye… Winky will miss them all her life.”
