CEDRIC

XLVIII

The last Defense Against the Dark Arts class before winter break was a particular one. Not because of the topics covered in it, which because of his teaching style were new to say the least. Sometimes Professor Moody could act a little strange, looking over his shoulder at the students and giving a scolding for talking as he was writing on the blackboard.

Fire was not very frequent at that class.

And Cedric had never accidentally started one ever before.

Moody cast a spell that snuffed out the parchment on his desk, muttering through his teeth, “You should be careful, Diggory. Water won’t always be the solution to all your problems."

Then he stared at Cedric with both eyes, the real one and the fake one, until he suddenly turned around and went back to his place in front of everyone.

Water .

"Ginny is my favorite Weasley."

Malcolm could sometimes make the most spontaneous statements.

Cedric thought that would be Fred. His rejection must have moved him down the list.

"The only Weasley girl," Willow commented, on the closest couch.

"That has to mean something, surely," Tam laughed, asking Malcolm his motives.

"I know I said I was going to the ball alone," he recalled, and they all nodded. Will with higher enthusiasm, as if waiting for something new that she anticipated would be interesting. Although she assured Malcolm that she had a friend or two who would like to go with him, Malcolm wanted nothing to do with it and decided that he'd rather attend on his own. Which would have caused Will to try and talk him out of it until the end, but if anyone could get away with having a good time anyway, it was Malcolm. "Ginny made me change my mind."

He could be stubborn at times, so that meant a lot.

"Is she your date?" Will, who usually wouldn't disagree, frowned.

"No, no. Ginny is a third year, what are you thinking? I prefer the seventh years," he answered, winking. "Technically my date is her date. She wanted to go with Luna Lovegood, but none of them could go because they're not in fourth year, so she asked me if I could take her as a favor to her. She knew that… Um, that Fred… You know,” he murmured and threw his hands into the air as he continued. "And I said yes. Who am I to stand in the way of young love?"

Tam looked almost as moved by the story as Will, who wanted to know who Ginny was going with.

"A classmate of her brother's in Gryffindor," Malcolm replied.

"And… Fred? Do you know who he will go with?" Will dared to ask too.

Despite her careful voice, she earned a suspicious look from Tam.

Cedric was about to change the subject when Malcolm said he didn't know.

Then Cedric intervened to talk about whether they had already chosen what to wear and those things that would move the conversation in another direction. Willow had already decided, Tam was still in doubt, and they even mentioned what Cho would use. Without any kind of extra comment. Cedric could tell by the way Will was looking at him that Tam had told her, just as he suspected and it was fine.

Her silent support was all he needed.

Although he had no interest in continuing to tell people those two words…
