They spend the afternoon strolling through the nearby stores, trying on everything they lay their eyes on. Leighton evaluates each piece and explains what occasion she would wear it for and Mabel is amazed by her friends talent.
They stop looking for own clothes, when they notice a girl struggling to find a prom dress. Her mother seems overwhelmed by the task, so Leighton steps in and goes through all the options with her. The girl decides on the most beautiful purple dress with a floral pattern, and Leighton advises her to wear her hair up, so that it won't bother her while dancing.
Somehow they end up talking about their coming out journey and past relationships. Leighton tells her about all the secrets and how good it finally felt, when she could be honest with herself in front of her friends. She hated dating men for her image and was so relieved that she could finally date a girl and get to know her without beeing scared.
Mabel explains that she considers herself lucky in that department, because she never had to come out to her family. Her father never cared what she and her sister did as long as they didn't embarrass him or bring shame to the family name.
Sometimes she had extra problematic partners to get some kind of reaction from him, but eventually she realized it was only hurting her. She was always unlabeled and decided to keep it that way.
After Mabel had told her everything, Leighton's body was completely tense. She couldn't even begin to imagine what it had been like for Mabel, and she wondered how a father could ever be that cold. She had been so lucky with hers. Everyone deserved that kind of stability, and it made her sick that Mabel didn't have it.
They hadn't been friends that long, but Leighton was already very protective about Mabel. Part of her wanted to punch her father, but Leighton immediately pushes that thought aside. She knows that wouldn't even help in the slightest.
She's glad that her friend had shared all of this with her. Since they had met, she had noticed that Mabel was a little reserved, so it was nice to see that she trusts Leighton.
After they go to a few more stores, Leighton takes Mabel to her favorite restaurant near Essex. It's fancy, but the blonde figures that Mabel is used to it from home.
They have a great time at dinner, while Leighton finally explains the mess she made at Essex after coming out. She doesn't usually like to talk about mistakes she's made, but Mabel's enjoyment seems worth the embarrassment, and she has to admit, that her behavior was quite problematic.
After Leighton excuses herself to go to the bathroom, Mabel pays for everything and proceeds to pull out her phone.
Her sister had sent her a message earlier that she couldn't spend Thanksgiving with her, but Mabel was used to spending it alone anyway. Her family was never particularly close, except for her sister and her, but her new job was in Miami, so they rarely saw each other in person.
She gathers all her things, when Leighton returns and puts on her coat.
"You already paid?"
"Yes, of course. Are you ready to go?"
Mabel starts to leave, but stops when she notices Leighton is still in the same place, staring at her phone.
"Leight? Is everything okay?"
Leighton shakes her head and puts her phone away, while following her outside.
"Sorry that was my dad", she sights.
"He keeps reminding me that my brother Nico has a date to my cousin's wedding in two weeks and that it would be nice if I had someone too. I told him I wasn't dating anyone and now he wants to set me up with his friend's daughter Marissa. Don't get me wrong, she's really nice, but we'll never be more than friends."
