"Mabel?" Whitney calls from the bathroom. "Can you come here? I need your help."
"Yeah, sure, what's up?" she asks, setting down her lip gloss to join Whitney in the bathroom.
They are in the middle of getting ready for the campfire while Leighton is outside talking to her dad on the phone.
"Do you think this is too much?" Whitney asks as she enters the bathroom and Mabel's mouth drops open when she sees Whitney's outfit and her matching make-up.
"It is, isn't it?" she asks, brushing a few strands of hair behind her ear as she looks in the mirror. "I just didn't want to look too casual. What are you supposed to wear to a campfire? It's practically impossible to find something," she grumbles, and Mabel gently places a hand on her back to calm her.
"Hey, don't worry, you look stunning, Whit. I was literally speechless. I'm sure the people there will be too," Mabel tells her with conviction and Whitney smiles at the thought.
Thank you, Mabel," she says and hugs her.
"Of course. Just be your confident self like always. It's really hot," says Mabel, giving Whitney a wink.
"What's hot?" asks Leighton as he enters the bathroom.
"Whitney's confidence. Don't you think?" she asks, smiling at Leighton.
"Of course I do. Wow you'll definitely attract people's attention with this outfit. It looks really good on you, Whit," she emphasizes and leans against the door.
You both look really good," she says, eyeing Mabel up and down before catching her gaze and Whitney looks at them with amusement.
"How did the talk with your dad go?" she asks as she picks up her bag.
"Okay, he wants me to go on vacation with them during the winter break, but I wasn't sure yet," Leighton says absently.
"Why is that? A few weeks ago you said you really want to go traveling," Whitney reminds her and Leighton lets out a sigh as she grabs her keys and jacket from the bed.
"I still want to, but I'm not sure I want to go anywhere with my family. I love them, but they can be quite a handful," Leighton says honestly, turning to open the door. "Are you guys ready?"
"Almost. I just need to find my jacket," says Mabel, crouching down to search through her suitcase.
"Why don't you help her while I check if the other's are ready to leave too, Leigh?" says Whitney, trying not to make her intentions obvious.
It's nice to see Leighton and Mabel as friends, but she doesn't know how they're handling all the tension.
She knows what longing for someone feels like, and she sees it every time Leighton looks at Mabel. When it comes to showing her feelings, Mabel is more cautious, but Whitney can still tell that she has them.
There were so many moments she's been aware of it in recent weeks, and she swears even she will die from the suspense if something doesn't happen soon. Therefore, she has decided to take more drastic measures. For example, forcing them to be alone, but she fears that won't be enough for Leighton to admit her feelings.
It's really shocking to see because Leighton was so confident to talk to any girl when she came out. Of course, back then she was just having fun and it had nothing to do with feelings, but Whitney still thought that Leighton was one of those people who pursues the one she likes.
"Yeah, sure, we'll be right out, so they better be ready," Leighton says, and Whitney smiles at that before leaving.
"I swear she knows," Mabel says after Whitney is out the door.
