The Halstead Reunion

Chapter 20

In Alex's room in the ICU Connor was sitting next to her just holding her hand looking as the ventilator was breathing for her as the monitor was slowly beeping when the door got slid open and Kelly and Matt walked in with Matt carrying little Josh in his arms.

"Hey, how is she?" Kelly asked quietly as him and Matt took a seat on the opposite side of her as he held her other hand.

"There haven't been any changes since they put her under. Will said she had to be under for a bit before they would try and take her off it again" Connor explained as they both nodded their heads when Josh woke up and started crying as Matt stood up and started bouncing him up and down to try and soothe him as he went outside the room for a moment doing it.

The bouncing didn't seem to help though and Josh kept crying as he sat down on a chair and tried to him his bottle but that didn't work either, when Natalie came walking by and Matt saw that as his last option.

"Hey Natalie, I have a feeling something is wrong with Josh, he woke up from his nap and started crying and he won't stop and won't eat either and nothing I do can seem to soothe him" Matt explained with a hint of worry in his tone ad Natalie took a look at him while Matt held him.

"He is a little warm, let's get him up to the PICU so I can examine him further" Natalie said as Matt nodded his head and he quickly texted Kelly letting him know he wasn't coming back any time to soon.

"If you can just place him down on this bed" Natalie said as Matt did so taking off his jacket so Natalie could examine him.

"Hey little guy, what seems to be wrong with you?" Natalie spoke softly to Josh as she put her stethoscope on him and listened to his heart as he started crying again.

"I know I know. We're almost done" Natalie spoke to him again as she took his temperature which was a bit higher than she liked it to be.

"Okay, so he seems to be having a light fever. I'm gonna put him on antibiotics and we'll monitor him over the night. You're welcome to stay with him or should I get Will and Jay to come?" She asked Matt before walking out.

"I'll stay with him it's fine. They got enough to worry about with Alex" Matt said as Natalie nodded her head and walked out leaving Matt with Josh as he just sat in silence looking over his small frame.

"You're gonna be okay. You and your mum are two of the strongest people I know" Matt quietly said to Josh as Kelly came walking in and Matt looked up.

"Connor is with Alex, what's wrong with him?" Kelly asked worried.

"Natalie says he has a light fever so they're keeping him for observation until tomorrow and hopefully he can get released before Alex" Matt said as Kelly nodded his head and took a seat next to him.

"I told Connor in case they take Alex off earlier and also called Jay and he's on his way. Will is not doing so well as far as I could understand on Natalie" Kelly said as Josh by now was fully in a deep sleep as they just watch his small chest rise and fall as Matt told Kelly he would watch over Josh until Jay gets here and would keep him updated.

Kelly greeted Matt bye as he went out and back down to the others to update them on everything.

"Matt is staying here for the night or until Jay can be here" Kelly said as someone nodded their heads and some looked confused.

"I thought Connor was staying with Alex for the night?" Stella said but it came out more as a question.

"He is yeah. Matt is staying with Josh in PICU, little guy got a light fever and is the second closest to him after Connor and I know it's what Alex would want as well" Kelly said as they all agreed with him and went back to the firehouse now that Chloe is stable and Josh is safe.
