Chapter 2
Honesty

I paced back and forth in my room trying to decide what to wear. I didn't really have any plan's except going from place to place trying to find a job, I needed to get out of my mother's place as quickly as possible. I decided to throw on a pair of blue jeans and a pink shirt with some black flats. I put my phone and house keys in my pocket along with my ID and some lip gloss.
I could hear the TV playing loudly from up the stairs. I took the stairs one at a time anxiety creeping at the pit of my stomach, reaching the door I sighed pulling it open. My mother's obnoxious laugh boomed through the top level I mentally rolled my eyes. I walked into the kitchen to see what I could find to eat. I glanced on the counter to see the pile of over due bills. Rent, water, electric, cable I sighed running my hands down my face. I swung the fridge open and peered inside. The stench of expired moldy food hit my nose I through my hand across my face slamming the door shut.

"Aye don't be slamming doors in a house you don't pay rent in!" My mother yelled from the living room
"From the looks of things you don't pay bills either" I mumbled under my breath
"What you say bitch?" She questioned
"Nothing!" I yelled loud enough so she could hear me over the TV

I sat on the kitchen counter stomach growling with a mug on my face.

"Aye you still got food stamps left?" I yelled into the living room

"Nah I sold what was left!" She yelled back

"For what to pay bills cuz we damn sure ain't got no food in here."

"If yo fat ass stop eating so much you wouldn't have to worry about it not being food in here." She grunted back

I simply rolled my eyes hopping off the counter and walked into the living room to see her stretched across the couch watching some movie.

"What about the bills in there?" I pointed towards the kitchen

She ignored me. I took the time to look her over, her hair was done and her nails looked like she just got a fresh set, biting my bottom lip and rolling my eyes I walked out the door slamming it behind me.

I walked up and down the streets trying to find a job, but without a high school diploma it wasn't many places that would hire me. I almost gave up until I decided to try the Super Market near my house, I had been going in there ever since I was a kid shit I can't do much but maybe they'll let me clean the floors or something.

Walking inside I held my head high and walked straight up to the counter.

"Is Mrs. Hattie here today?" I asked the girl behind the counter

She looked me up and down with a bored expression before popping her gum.

"Yeah I'll go get her." She replied before walking off

I waited and waited finally she came walking around the corner.

"Honesty? What's going on?" She wondered wiping her hands on her apron.

I didn't expect her to put me on the spot like that but fuck it.

"Ya'll hiring?" I asked looking up at her

"We are but not until the summer season when everything picks back up." She uttered as she watched my face rise and fall

"Ok." I sadly replied

"Wait, you can fill out an application now, come on follow me."

I followed her to the back room where a computer was located. She logged on and pulled up the application.

"Here fill this out and I'll be right back."

I simply nodded as she walked off. By the time I finished she was walking back in to check my progress.

"I'm finished." I replied, little did she know when it asked about my high school diploma I lied and said I had one. Shit I was desperate.

"I see you in here filling out an application what's that mother of yours doing?" She put her hands on her hips

"What do you think." I rolled my eyes.

Mrs. Hattie knew all about my mother and her "ways"

"Just keep praying baby I promise things will get better." She smiled at me.

I simply smiled back, I didn't wanna be rude but I stopped believing in God a long time ago.

I left the Super Market feeling like I at least accomplished something. I mean it was a start, I began my journey back home I was almost there when I heard a car slow down beside me. I didn't look up I just kept walking.

"Aye!" Someone yelled.

I kept walking.

"Aye! What you deaf?" The voice called out followed by them beeping the horn.

I finally looked up to see a candy apple red McLaren, I looked around at my neighbor and figured he must be lost. I raised my eyebrow as if to say "What?"

"You need a ride?" He asked looking me up and down

"No." I simply replied walking off leaving him there with a stunned expression

"Wait, you're about to enter into a dangerous area and you shouldn't be walking alone."

"I don't get in the car with strangers." I stopped walking to glance at him

"Ok. My name is King, now we ain't strangers." He flashed me smile

I took a good look at him. He was light skinned with deep waves I couldn't really see from where I was but he had a little bit of facial hair. I walked to the front of his car then the passenger before climbing inside.

"What did you just do?" He asked chuckling

"I was getting your tag number in case you try something." I shrugged

"You didn't even right it down." He laughed shaking his head

"I got it up here." I tapped my forehead.

I gave him my address and he pulled off. Making sure I got a good look at his face I could tell he had freckles all over his cheeks and nose. I looked at his hands and they appeared to be pretty clean.

"You didn't tell me your name?" He looked over at me before looking back at the road

"Honesty." I uttered quickly glancing around his car.

His car was clean, he was clean, the jewelry? He screamed drug dealer. I noticed we were nearing my crib.

"You can let me out right here." I pointed to the curb

"You not goin give me your house number?" He smirked

"No." I simply replied before hopping

"Aye you goin lemme get your number?"

"No." I simply replied slamming his car door behind me. I could hear him laughing as I turned to walk towards my house.

Trey

"I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry" Amber kept repeating over and over

We were in the waiting room of Grady's Memorial Hospital, I paced back and forth on the tile floor.

I just kept thinking maybe if I wasn't recording, or what if I came upstairs earlier.

"Mr. and Mrs. Neverson." I heard from behind me

I spun around to see the doctor standing in front of me he wore a blank expression.

"How is she? How's my baby?" Amber rushed over to my side

"I'm sorry with the amount of water that was in her lungs and her young age, We did everything we could...." His voice trailed off

"NOOOOOOOOO! GOD NO NOT MY BABY!" Amber yelled collapsing to the ground.

I felt like I had just been shot in the chest, I gasped for air but the walls began to close in. She's gone, my little girl is gone.
