Season 1 Episode 1
Ameka POV
"$20.99. That's all I can provide." I murmured, clutching the romance novel tightly. Each organelles in my fingertips was clinging to Mary Higgins Clark's narrative. It was the latest installment of the mystery series "A cry in the night."
"Ameka, 30.99 dollars and that's all." Mrs. Evie spoke inanely. Her lifeless blue eyes stared at me. "And I'm sure you've read half the book simply by walking to the counter."
I did, in fact, read a couple of chapters.
I bite my lower lip, staring at the remaining twenty bucks I had stashed aside for this book. Carly Book Store was the sole book store in the area, as opposed to the municipal library.
When I inquired about the book at the public library, I was met with dismay since the book was not even permitted in the library. So I was stuck with the city's most costly bookstore.
"How about it, Mrs. Evie?" I paused, my gaze fixed on my over-the-shoulder bag. The strap was worn, and I wouldn't be surprised if it snapped one day. I've owned this backpack since junior year of high school and want to keep it till I die. I took out my phone. Then I bored a little hole in the sack. There were at least a dozen chocolate bars there.
Mrs. Evie and I both enjoy chocolate bars. As a regular client, I could pawn a few items with her to get my hands on a few books.
"The twenty bucks with one hazelnut chocolate bar." I went through the tastes. I wiggled with delight as I got my hands on the chocolate.
I returned my gaze to her. Her blue eyes are suddenly gleaming. Inside, I couldn't help but smile.
"I'll have two chocolate bars."
I groaned, realizing that I was as clingy as the Grinch when it came to chocolate bars and all things chocolate. She pulled her hands together, each of them desiring the two chocolate bars and the twenty bucks.
"You're stealing from me, Mrs. Evie."
"The two chocolates would cost $5 apiece, and the book would cost $30."
I rolled my eyes since the book wasn't thirty bucks. She just increased the price of every single book. Because she knew she was the only book narrative in town, and everyone, including myself, had to rely on her.
Her wrinkled fingers gripped my paperback book. It was, after all, her novel. But the instant I laid eyes on it, I knew it was mine. She waved the book in front of my face, and my gaze followed it like a captivated patient. She has me wrapped around her little finger.
"I just have one chocolate bar left." My stare stayed on the book, I responded.
I must have it...
"Let's go, Ameka. There must be chocolate inside that sack someplace, right? My finger vanished into the bag, leaving me with a chilly gaze in my eyes. I grabbed another chocolate bar and thrust it at her.
"As well as the twenty bucks."
I grumbled as I slammed the twenty bucks on the counter. I pushed the money at her with all my might.
She shoved the book in my direction. I carefully scooped it up, a smile on my face. "It's a pleasure doing business with you, Mrs. Evie."
"It's the same for you, Ameka." The elderly lady laughed and handed me the receipt.
As I went away, I started putting away the receipt, which would soon be gone, along with many other receipts in my bag.
If someone were to examine my luggage, they would find just chocolate bars, receipts, and zero dollars.
