Season 1 Episode 10
Meka POV
Going to the city to dine and returning took significantly less time than I expected. I couldn't believe she had gone to the extreme of having me have lunch at the city. And the better news was that it was going to become commonplace. I didn't want to say anything to her about her vegan lifestyle and how it may have a negative affect on Lily. Maybe I was overreacting, or maybe I didn't know how to care for a developing child.
"Wonderful, you returned." Lucinda's monotone voice spoke out. It bothered me that she didn't hide her dislike for me. "I was hoping you wouldn't."
Holding a broom, she was clearing the dusty porch. She blows dust in my way.
"I'll be going in a year. And you'll be stranded here since you're old and don't have any children to return to." I coughed and brushed the dust off my face.
"I enjoy my work. And the only reason she's so sweet to you is because—"
"That's enough, Lucinda." A man with dark hair, who appeared to be in his mid-forties, reprimanded.
Excellent, another worker who appeared to be present. At the end of the day, I wonder if they all live here or go home.
It would be interesting to know whether there are any regular people in the area, as Jackson and her children' constant black dress doesn't seem typical to me. They could be mourning Jesus, but that doesn't seem normal.
"Gale, mind your own business. Do you not have any flowers to plant?"
Oh, he's the Gardener, or at least he seems like one now that I'm looking at his complete outfit. Buttoned-up shirt tucked into khaki trousers with dirt and muck all over them. On his feet were two massive water boots with muck around the bottom.
"Just leave the girl alone." He turned to face me, a smile on his lips, but as he focused on my features, his eyes widened.
I rolled my eyes, no longer astonished by anyone's big eyes while looking at me.
"You can tell I wasn't lying now." She hissed and retreated inside.
"My name is Ameka."
He shook his head and looked away. I could hear faint mumbles coming from him. At least he was on my side when Lucinda was about to claw my face off with her rude remarks. So I have nothing against him for refusing to speak to me.
"Okay, then." I whispered as I entered the home. I couldn't figure out why, the moment I walked in, my mind went to Lily and her mother. Maybe it was because I learned they didn't agree on everything.
A small part of me resisted leaving them both together. I had no idea why I was feeling this way.
"You're only here for the money every month."
Upon seeing the young maid from this morning, I immediately took action. Her name didn't immediately appeal to me. "Hello, you." I yelled. She turned around and shushed me with her finger to her mouth. It wasn't all that horrible having a little noise about here. I approached her carefully since it appeared like I was strolling too loudly.
"This morning—"
"Everything is buttered up." She interrupted me before I could continue. I couldn't figure out why I was suddenly interested in Jackson and her.
Were they dating in secret? Were they madly in love? Was Jackson actually in love with her wife? This girl appears to be so appealing that anyone would like a taste of her.
