Season 1 Episode 16
Ameka POV
"Stay nearby, don't let go, of my hand." The girl concentration was everywhere but what I was saying to her. As we rushed into Starbucks, I made sure to grab her hand tightly. My planned time with my sister, primarily spent interrogating her, would have to be slashed in half.
I just saw Lily has her pencil bag and sketch book tucked beneath her arm. It might be a little distraction.
I looked around and saw my sister, who was sitting in the center of the Cafe. Her eyes widened when she spotted me. It had to be from seeing Lily.
I positioned Lily in the corner of the booth "Good day, Auntie Piper."
"What are you doing here, Lily?"
"Mommy is trying to kill me. Kami and her—"
"Just please draw something for me." I took the book and pencil case and set them on the booth, I remarked.
"What would you like me to draw, Momma?"
"Whatever you want, sweetie." I pecked her forehead. I move to the far end of the booth, giving her some space. I stretched across the booth, Piper and I meeting halfway across the booth table.
"What made you bring her into the city? She is not permitted to be here."
"Please excuse my concern for the girl. She didn't want to be with Lucinda. Because, well, she's a jerk." I groaned.
"Jackson is going to have a tantrum."
"Do I look to give a fuck? I want some answers, and that's why I'm here." I shouted quietly.
"Answers for what."
"Well with Zayla and—"
"Let me pause you there; what transpired is none of your concern."
"How did she pass away?" Despite her interruption, and knowing that going into the city was a waste of time and risk for Lily, I continue with the questions. She was going to provide me with all the information I required.
"Zayla passed away. Everyone move on."
"Fine. When did Kamila and Jackson first start dating? Was it while Zayla was on her deathbed or just after she died?"
"Don't even think about making any assumptions. If Jackson discovers you are attempting to pry into her personal life. She'll destroy you."
"Oh, no." I laughed. "I'm so scared."
"Get her back home right away."
"But I haven't had my coffee yet."
"Leave right now. I'll contact Jackson and see if I can get through to you."
I sighed and rolled my eyes. I'm still waiting for answers and, worse, coffee. This trip was a total waste of time.
*********
Jackson was pacing up and down the porch as the car got closer to the home. I swallowed and exchanged a concerned look with Lily. We were both in a lot of trouble.
"Do you think you could let us stay in the car, Dave?"
"No way, Ms. Dungeon." He remarked, getting out of the vehicle and opening the door on my side. I stayed sitting. I couldn't possibly lose the job I'd just begun. I needed the money since college was my only chance for success. But maybe I should have thought about it before I practically abducted Lily and took her to the city with me.
"Let's go, Lily." Coming out of the car, I extended my hand to her.
"Momma, you'll fight for me right now." She asked, glancing at my hand.
"I'll give it my all."
She grabbed my head. We both walk slowly, with Lily trailing behind us. Jackson's steely gaze locked on us. Instead, I cringed, trying to hide behind Lily. Gosh, I was such a coward.
I stood there watching as she unbuckled her belt. It was dragged out of the barricades and folded. "Come here." She spoke quietly to Lily or was it me? My heart stopped beating in my pitiful chest. Her tranquility terrified me, and a part of me wished she was screaming and shouting at us. But she won't, will she? Because she was a widow mourning the loss of her late wife.
I could feel Lily's arms clutching my clothing. I had no idea why my eyes were welling up with tears. But a part of me thought it was all my fault. I was too young for the situation and should've just waited till they returned.
"Please, Jackson, don't—"
"Don't say anything about my child to me." She took the last step down, and with one movement she grabbed me, dragging me closer, I gasped loudly, as our bodies touched. Her dark gaze pierced my terrified soul. She then shoved me out of the way while clutching Lily in her hand.
"No! Please, it was entirely my responsibility."
"Of course it was, and she'll be punished for it." She started dragging a screaming and wailing Lily up the stairwell. The fragile girl could only do so much to put her feet down. When she noticed her unwillingness to walk correctly, she hauled her up off the ground by her clothing.
I raced into the home. Jackson was up the stair. Lucinda raced ahead of me, impeding my progress. "Move." I grumbled. "She's just a kid, and I—"
"It's her child; let her do whatever she wants with her."
"That's how you propose about it." I tried to get away from the old lady, but she was as fast as a Jaguar. "That is a form of abuse." I grumbled.
"No, it isn't. It is discipline. You've accepted everything you see around here."
"Lucinda, I really need to go up there."
"You—"
"Allow her to come up." Jackson stated from the apex.
"However, Jackson—"
"I'd want to talk with her right now, Lucinda."
I shoved Lucinda out of the way and dashed up the steps. Jackson's hand has already indicated her office. "Did you hit her?" I inquired, disregarding her requests.
"I did. She deserved it."
"May I speak with her?"
"You'll see her when she finishes her studies. She's also still on punishment."
"Please just let me check on her." It was all in my brain that this was all my fault. "I shouldn't have taken her away. She was fleeing and said you were attempting to harm her, so I decided she needed—"
"My child doesn't need anything. She has everything she needs. Office now, Ameka."
I decided not to fight with her about it and followed her to the office.
She shut the door. "Give me one reason not to toss you out of my house, much alone report you to the authorities for abducting my child."
She was reading too much into it. "Fire me if you have to. But she's only a kid. I realize I don't have a child, but you're wrecking her childhood."
She scowled, "My child is ok. She's maturing like she should."
"She isn't. She does nothing enjoyable. She basically despises you. Why can't she realize that her mother is no longer alive? Instead, she is seeking solace in someone else."
"I believe you should refrain from speaking. Because you're trying to talk your way out of this job." She stated. "You wanted this job and agreed to the terms. It's merely out of respect that Lily calls you momma."
It was more than noble.
