Season 1 Episode 5

Meka POV

I slammed the door shut but immediately regretted it when I heard heavy foot steps.

Holy shit!

"I'm sure you didn't just bang my fucking door!" Patterson screamed. Patterson was my father. However, once he decided to put a bottle to his mouth, I stopped referring to him as dad and even stopped considering him to be a parent. I don't mean a bottle of Pepsi or some pepper sauce. I'm referring to a bottle of booze.

I could hear his massive body approaching me. Maybe leaving to meet a possible ghost of someone's dead wife wasn't such a horrible idea.

"Evening." The stink of alcohol constricted my nostrils, and I nearly puked on the spot.

"Where have you been."

"A conversation." I kept walking towards my room. "Where has Jackie gone?"

"You mean your fucking mother, you fucking bitch!"

"Yeah her!" I retorted.

"She's working."

"You mean selling her ass so you can buy drugs? So you could become drunk. You're really pitiful." I walked away, sneering.

"Were you with a boy, huh?" He asked in a spit, his fingers snagging on my shoulder.

"I've already told you, you jerk. Get off of me." I shoved him to the side as I rushed inside my room. I slammed the door shut swiftly.

"Ameka, open the fucking door." He hurled drunken insults.

"Patterson, go to bed!" As I hurried into the little closet, the door roared back at me.

The door was already falling off the hinges. Everything in the house was either broken or just missing. Patterson was too drunk to do anything. My mother was too busy working the streets to help me.

I took out a duffel bag and dragged a few items off the racks. I just have to stay in this room until tomorrow, when I will never have to return.

Meka POV

"Morning." I grumbled grumpily to my sister as I kneeled on the car seat to swing my luggage in the back. My mother raced out as the door swing opened, her robe practically fastened to show off her droopy, pale skin. She reminded me of the bathroom ghost from "The Shining."

"What a horrifying sight." As I sat down on the seat, I muttered and hastily shut the door.

"Drive, Piper. What are you looking forward to?!" I screamed.

"Perhaps she wishes to express something." I pressed the car's automatic winder, raising the window a notch.

"The only fucking thing she'll do is drag me out of this car."

"Did you inform them that you were leaving?" She inquired, terrified. I hastily close the latch. "Jesus...Meka," she exhaled.

"I don't know? Did you inform them of your departure date?" I snarled, my head snapping back to see the enraged lady approaching. We had some similarities, except she was growing old and unattractive.

"Ameka! Get back inside this fucking house!"

"Go away mom!" I responded by yelling back. "Piper just fucking drive. What are you waiting for!" I hissed in frustration. Our mother dashed to Piper's side of the car.

"You're trying to turn her into a fag like you."

"I'm already a fag, mom. I banged your bestie!"

"Get out that damn car!" Her fist pounded on the metal body. "If you don't want to fix such a costly window, I recommend we leave right now!" I shouted at Piper. She sighed, stepped on the gas pedal, and drove away.

"Fuck you mom!" I yelled as I rolled down the window. I held out my middle finger, the warm breeze swaying it. "At long last, I'm free!"

Piper was pushing me back inside her car. I burst out laughing. "I'm liberated! I have spent nearly my whole life anticipating this day."

"How about after work? What would you do?"

"I went straight to college. Get a second job to help pay for my apatment. I don't want to see them again."

"Only when they die, you mean?"

My laughter faded. "When you say it like way, it makes me think. Such as right now."

"I've always thought about them." Piper admitted.

"They've treated you like garbage. And when you ran away, I was left to deal with everything. Piper, do you miss how they mistreated you? Because I'll never forget the stench and sound of their deeds."

"I just—"

"You don't have an excuse." I ruptured.

"I got kicked out. I, too, am subject to their judgment."

"But you left me in there with them. Last night was the only time I slept well. Knowing I was leaving for good to start my new life."

"This will not be an easy road. So don't get too worked up. Jackson isn't the most attractive of the bunch."

"She is stunning." I muttered. I stare out the window, my flush visible in the reflective glass.

"She's a Stone for a reason." She has the ability to be as hard as stone. And frugal. I despised her when I first met her. Then I met her wife. She pulls forth her finest qualities. And now that she's gone, the best of Jackson is gone as well. I simply wish you had accepted my offer to send you to college."

"Our parents are worse than she is. I believe."

"We can only hope."
