Tofu's awake before dawn, soft sunlight dripping through the boarded window. He looks around, hoping that Gazz was just out late, but he's still not back. Although every other day he's ignored it, his legs feel extremely sore. His legs just want to give out as he walks over to the desk. Grabbing the watering can takes double the effort and watering his plant takes even more. He's already exhausted by the time he opens his to-do list.
Walking up to the roof takes the last bit of energy out of him. He's only got one more set of stairs to the top, but they feel like twenty. His legs give away halfway through the climb, sending him painfully back down. Tofu just lays there, bathing in his own suffering. 'Cmon, we need to get stuff done. Apocalypse doesn't pause just because someone has sore legs.' He reminds himself. Shaking, he climbs up the stairs.
He can't focus nor work on anything. His legs barely function and re-setting up the garden's watering system isn't on his mind. Tofu can't do anything right and just sits down, failing to calm his mind enough to work. Soon enough he caves, and carefully walks back down to his floor. 'Fine. We'll rest for a while, then search for Gazz.' He plans. His legs enjoy the rest. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to be able to sleep, his brain annoyingly counting each second he waits.
After around an hour he gets up. Moving isn't as much of a pain and he leaves the building in a few minutes. Picking up the scent trail from yesterday, Tofu travels across the city, dodging hoards of zombies. He's sorta concerned with the amount of zombies that were roaming around, there usually not this many just wandering through the city. But he continues his search anyway. The alley with the small camp greets him soon enough.
The air is eerily empty, just the wind quietly blowing through the desolated camp. Shivers goes down his spine as he searches for Gazz. 'There's no sign of him, where did they go?' His searches come up dry. There's no signs of him getting hurt though, which is a little comforting for Tofu. Another scent trail is next to a connecting alleyway. He follows it, hoping that Gazz just left to somewhere safer. The trail goes in loops, almost purposely confusing for him.
'Is Gazz trying to hide something from me?' Tofu thinks, only to come across something that makes his blood run cold. A pool of blood, in the middle of the street. A small trail of it leads to a building. Gazz and that other survivor was attacked. He runs into the building, realizing the pool of blood is still fresh. His mind starts thinking about the worst case scenario, and he tries to quiet those thoughts. Gazz is still alive, hopefully.
The building is falling apart, holes in walls and the roof, broken windows and random junk strewn about everywhere. It was also full of zombies, each one alert. The trail leads to a different room, but Tofu can't get to it thanks to the monsters. He walks outside and luckily finds a hole where the stairwell is. Blood leads up the stairs and further up. 'Gazz must've gone to the top, it would be the safest place with only one way up.'
The next floor has just as many zombies as the last. Except they're even more alert. Tofu begins to sneak around them, carefully stepping around pieces of rubble and hiding from their gaze. The blood trail starts to become only drips as he continues up the building. The floors are a gamble, either being filled with zombies or scarily empty. Wind is blowing through the holes, which still persist although being a couple of floors up. Time hasn't treated this building well.
Climbing up the building only reminds Tofu about his aching legs. They begin to hurt again close to the ninth floor. His home building is only seven floors high, he's probably above most of the buildings at this point. The trail of blood is gone, only Gazz's scent remains. There's a lot less rubble up here than the lower floors, but there's still just as many zombies. 'I've never seen this many in one place before, why are they all here?' Tofu thinks.
He reaches the final set of stairs, the sky piercing through the stairwell due to it completely breaking. The stairs are caked in rubble, the past roof leaving its last remains to stand in his way. He begins climbing, brushing some of the remnants to create a path. Tofu clears a small spot to climb, when the rubble falls. Then another falls with it, and then another. Soon the staircase turns into a cascade of debris. He barely gets out of the way, but the noise echoes through the floor, maybe even building.
He quickly climbs to the top just to hear the last thing he wanted to hear. A zombie groans, alerting the other zombies who also groan. Soon enough, Tofu grimaces as the entire building gets filled with the groans of zombies. He climbs up to the roof to only see two more monsters, both staring at him. The fear he felt gets replaced with grief. Gazz stands in front of him, with a Roserade next to him. 'The survivor he was helping.' Tofu's mind puts together.
Nothing happens for the next few seconds. Staring down Gazz and waiting for him to strike. But Tofu doesn't want to strike. He fell in love with him, attacking his crush just seems wrong. They both just wait, time ticking on slowly. He's a little on edge, a zombie hasn't waited this long to attack. Metal scraping against something distracts everyone on the roof. Tofu looks down the stairwell, just to see a giant horde of zombies trying to get up, but tripping on the debris.
Tofu realizes why they're waiting, just as the two zombies strike.
