Working in the darkness gets easy after a few months.
Sometimes I think my eyes have evolved to have night vision, but it's just because spending months in this darkness has finally begun to feel normal. The world no longer has colors, just lighter and darker grays. One day, almost miraculously, another beam of light came down from somewhere outside one of the many windows and lit up the bunker more.A tiny bit of light shines into my prison. It allowed me to see a lot easier until my eyes finally got used to the shadows. Now I work, trying to find a cure to this infection with the minimal tools I have. I was scared of running out of water and food, but a broken pipe supplies me with water and I've begun growing plants. I was able to find some seed, specially made to grow in very low light levels. It seems like this bunker was prepared for anything.
I've been working towards a way to get power back to the facility, and I think after a few weeks I've finally found it. If I use the last bit of the generator fuel I could use the computer to redirect the power from the solar panels just to my bunker. The only problem is I don't know how much fuel is left, and how long I have on the computer. For all I know the solar panels could be broken or obscured. It's a chance I have to risk though, getting power will make everything a lot easier.
So, I carefully pour the last bit of fuel into the generator, making sure not to waste a drop. I make sure the lights are off, not wanting to burn my eyes. That would make me waste the precious time I have with power. Then, I start the generator.
The noise of it starting is the first new thing I've heard in months. I run over to the computer and turn it on. The light from the screen burns my eyes, and I waste a few seconds adjusting to the bright display. I squint and continue on, logging in and accessing the power terminal. I quickly type the command to adjust power settings to each room. I set all to zero except the bunker I'm locked in. I confirm the command. After a few seconds of loading, the terminal sends a single line back to me.
'Success!' I read in my head. This one word alone makes me start shaking. It worked, I have power. I turn off the computer and pace back and forth. I notice a few screens on the machines turn on and I begin laughing to myself, ecstatic that this actually worked. I turn off the generator and the screens still stay on. I laugh even more, and begin crying. It was amazing just how moving electrons could bring me to such a state of joy.
I turn off the computer just in case. I still should conserve the energy I use. Making my way over to the door is a little difficult, the light from the computer made me lose my vision. Hopefully just my night vision quote on quote. I find the light switch soon. After closing and covering my eyes just in case, I flick it on. Even with everything blocking my eyes, it still hurts a little. I shut my eyes harder and bury my face in my paws.
After what feels like forever, I can let a little more light in. Slowly I re-adapt to the light. It takes almost two hours. My eyes must've been insanely dilated. Soon enough I can look around my prison I've been trapped in. It looks pretty and weird with colors. The room is still pretty gray, but now has the colors of the machines and filing cabinets to mix it up a little. The windows don't show anything new though, still being completely dark except for the tiny beam of light.
Suddenly, the roof creaks. I'm just assuming it's the bunker settling. But then, a zombie crashes through the roof. I stare at it, terrified. I just restored the power and I can't die yet! The infected look around, seemingly confused on why the floor just collapsed in on them. I look around and find a small cage, meant for catching wild Pokémon, and set it up. By the time I'm done, the zombie has finally regained its bearings and is now groaning angrily.
It lunges at me and I feel its claws rake my side. Pain shoots through my whole body and I roll out of the way of their next attack. I have to trick this thing into the cage. My mind comes up with a plan as I walk towards the open end of the cage. I spin it to face them and put my body in front of the door. The zombie lunges at me, growling. I jump and it slams into the cage. The door closes and locks automatically.
The screams from the infected Pokémon hurt my ears. They claw at the door and walls of the cage, trying to break it. I know I have to calm it down, because it can definitely break the metal if it tries more. I grab some sleeping powder from one of the filing cabinets, using it on the zombie. I luckily knew we had some, thanks to suffering from insomnia during the first few weeks of being stuck in the bunker.
I look over to the zombie. They're still growling angrily, but no longer as loudly. Also, they've stopped biting and scratching at the bars. I realize something and sigh.I'm just as trapped as they are. But, I have the stuff to get freed. I have machines and resources to get out. If I just work hard enough, I can free the city from the infection. I'll be a hero to everyone! I just have to start somewhere.
Or in better words, continue my research.
