Chaewon

Going into my first day of work isn't much different from every other day I walk in here.

I do what I normally do. I put on an apron, and get to work behind the counter. I take orders, make coffee, serve food to tables.

I would do all of this without getting paid, now the money is just a plus.

The morning rush has finally ended, and I feel I can breathe for a couple of hours until lunch rolls around.

"How are you doing kiddo?" Nana asks, patting me on the back.

I turn around, smiling down at the shorter woman.

"You're acting like it's my first time working here." I laugh.

"Ah Chaewon! Let me have my fun!" Nana scolds, pinching my arm. I quickly pull back, rubbing the part she pinched.

"Here comes a customer." Nana points behind me, and I put on my customer service face, and turn around.

I usually know all of our customers. Mainly the usual customers, along with a new one every now and then that will inevitably become a usual, but this girl I've never seen before.

She's tall, well taller than I am. She has long, blonde hair, and dark eyes that you could easily get lost in.

She's pretty... very pretty.

She gives me a half-hearted forced smile, that for some reason pains me a little.

"Hi, what can I get you today?" Despite her look of not wanting to be here, I still act professionally, not dwelling on the slight bitterness of the whole situation.

"I was wondering if you guys are hiring?" Her voice definitely isn't from here. It's a mix of accents that I've never heard before.

"Um... I will be right back." I turn on my heels heading to the back to find where nana has ran off to.

I spot her bent down checking the cupcakes that are in the oven.

"Nana." I say softly, trying not to startle her. I wouldn't want to give her another heart attack that she claims I give her every time I "sneak up on her."

"Wonnie!" She says standing up quickly. She turns around holding her heart. I can never win with this woman!

"I'm sorry!" I apologize grabbing her arm giving her elbow a little squeeze.

"What do you need darling?" She asks after catching her breath for a few seconds. "The girl that just walked in before you left," nana nods in remembrance of the girl.

"She wants to know about any job openings." I tell her, and she seems like she's pondering on what I've told her.

"Does she seem nice?" Nana asks. "Yes." I answer quickly. I immediately scold myself in my head for lying. This girl seems anything but nice, so why would I lie about that?

"Then sure!" Nana says nonchalantly, and turns back to her cooking.

"So you're just not going to interview her... or ask any questions at all?" I ask, a little taken aback how quickly Nana agreed.

I mean sure the girl doesn't seem dangerous, but then again neither does a lot of people that are.

I don't know her, or how she will act with customers. What if she tries poisoning the food? What if she gets orders wrong? I can't allow her to be hired without us knowing her, and feel safe about it.

"I mean you can interview her if you want. I trust your intuition." Nana turns back to look at me, giving me a soft smile and a little wink.

I furrow my brows at her before turning back around to go talk to the girl. I've left her waiting long enough.
