It was a rather stormy night. We were driving home after a movie and dinner. My dad was driving, my mom was at the front seat and I was sitting at the back.
"Come on mom, you can't be serious. How can you like Pineapple Pizza?" I asked, laughing.
"I agree with Erin, there are so many better flavours out there Maria." My dad said.
"Pineapple is a very misunderstood flavour. You guys have barely even tried it, yet look at you both ganging up on me." My mom replied with a pout.
Me and my dad were laughing and my mum was pouting. Soon, she too joined in our laughter.
"How did you guys like the movie though?" my dad asked.
"It was quite nice but I feel like the ending was a bit abrupt." I said thoughtfully.
"Right?" my mom agreed. "Yeah, I think..." but she had suddenly stopped talking and a moment later, I understood why.
Due to the storm, my dad had lost control of the wheel and the car had skid turning upside down at the corner of the road. I remember feeling considerable pain and my vision blurred and I could only see darkness.
3 DAYS LATER
I remember waking up in an unfamiliar white room. My head felt heavy and my body felt sore. I tried getting up but the pain was making it difficult. I slowly made an effort and got up and a nurse came rushing towards me immediately.
"Lie down, lie down" she said in a soothing voice. "You're not supposed to get up. You're still very weak and need a lot of rest."
"I'm okay." I muttered. "Just feeling weak. How are my parents?"
The nurse stared at me with sad eyes for amoment. "You have been out for 3 days but you'll feel better soon. The doctors have to keep you in here for observation for a few days. Luckily, the impact was not that severe. You had quite a deep wound on your left arm which had to be stitched and minor bruises all over which have been taken care of. However, you hit your head quite hard during the crash had a concussion. So, you need the rest." she continued as though she had not heard my question.
"How are my parents?" I repeated in a louder and firmer voice. "You grandmother is here. It's best you talk to her." She continued in a soft voice and left.
"Erin! Erin!" my granny cried running towards me. "How are you feeling? Are you okay? Does it hurt a lot? Is there anything I can help-"
"Granny granny, I'm fine" I said with a small laugh."Seriously, I'm okay. I feel a little sore, but that's completely normal right now. Don't worry and take a deep breath. How are mum and dad?"
She looked at me sadly with tears welling in her eyes. She looked like she had done nothing but cry. Her eyes were all red with dark circles underneath. All of a sudden, she looked much older than before.
"What happened granny? They're okay right? They're gonna be okay right?" I repeated loudly.
"Erin" she said sobbing now,"They -they couldn't make it sweetheart. The-the impact was too bad. Your father die-died on the spot. Your mom fought really hard in the hospital, but-but she couldn't make it either. I am so so sorry honey."
I was thunderstruck with her words. I stared at her with my mind blank and not being to process anything.
Apart of me wished that it was all a bad dream and my mom would wake me up in her cheerful voice, "Wake up ErBear, you're gonna be late for school."
"She's a sleepyhead like her father." My dad would chuckle and say proudly.
But I knew it wasn't. This was reality, a harsh and cruel one at that. No, this can't be happening. This is not happening. I don't deserve this, granny doesn't deservethis, my parents don't deserve it. They can't die. They just can't. They are incredibly wonderful, helpful and hardworking people and parents who have done nothing but wished and done good for others and this is how they are repaid? NO NO NO, I can't live in a world without them. I'm not strong enough. Why did they die? Why couldn't I have died with them? Why do I have to live in a world without them? I screamed in my head. "I'm really sorry too granny." I whispered. Tears started welling in my eyes and I did nothing but hug my granny and cry for the next 6 hours. By the 7th hour, my eyes were so tired that they couldn't stay awake anymore. That month was where I was at my worst.
I suddenly woke up with a start feeling sweat all over my face.
So, Erin's past is finally revealed. I know it's a little heavy... but the chapters will get lighter.
