I woke up feeling sweat across my face and my body shivering. For some reason, the incident felt so real. I mean, it was real but it just felt like the entire thing happened a few seconds back. I took a few deep breaths and tried to calm myself down but for some reason my body kept shaking uncontrollably.
"Erin, Erin!" my granny came running towards me.
"What happened? Are you okay?"
"Yeah- yeah, I'm I'm fine, granny." I replied shakily.
"Of course, you're not fine. Look at you, you're shaking. Did you have a nightmare again?" She looked at me and understood. "Oh, I'm so sorry sweetie." She said giving me a warm hug.
"I hate this granny, so much. I just don't understand why this incident keeps replaying in my dreams. I don't want to keep reliving this in my head all the time. It just- I hate it, I really hate it.
"I know you do sweetie, of course you do. I don't imagine anyone who would want to see something like this in their head while sleeping. I used to get these nightmares too. But they are better now." she replied softly.
"You did? But how did you learn to control them? Can you control them? How did you make it better?"
"I'll tell you all about in honey. But, right now, you need to get some sleep. I'll sleep next to you." Saying this, she gave me a kiss on the cheek, put her arms around me and both of us slept, two hurting people- one who lost her parents and one who lost her children.
"Okay Granny, I'm ready. Ready to get rid of these nightmares once and for all." I said as soon as I finished my breakfast on Saturday morning.
"Not now honey" Granny said. "In the afternoon, if you want to so badly."
"Granny, why not now?" I whined like a three-year-old.
"Erin, I want to give you some time before we start this process. It's best to start it soon but you just had the nightmare last night. It's barely been a few hours. Enjoy your time today, go for a walk, watch a movie, do what you want to do. I promise I'll tell you all about it. It's a rather tiring process but it's effective."
"Fine Granny, if you say so. We'll meet in the hall by 4:30 pm sharp." I said, feeling all businesslike.
"Yes, my dear" granny said laughing.
I decided to enjoy the rest of my day. I had two assignments to complete. Some complicated calculus questions in Math and an essay in English on the topic, "Climate Change and Youth Activism." I had most of the draft for that ready yesterday itself and fortunately I like Math so my assignments didn't take too long. I then watched 'Baby's Day Out', one of my all-time favourites and went to Starbucks for a coffee (me and my love for coffee. Coffee really is my bae) where I had my favourite, Caramel Macchiato. I sat there for some time enjoying the breeze and reading my current obsession, 'The Inheritors.' Ahh... Fictional men. It was already 2 pm by the time I came home. Granny had prepared a protein salad and an egg sandwich for lunch. After eating, I spend the next 2 hours sleeping because nothing can beat afternoon sleep for some reason. I was ready by 4:30 pm and ran down to the hall ready for my nightmare torture to end.
"Wow, you're right on time." Said granny who was already sitting on her rocking chair waiting for me.
She has had that chair since I can remember. My grandad had got it for her on her 30th birthday and she has loved her chair ever since. Part of her loves that chair more than anything is because it reminds her of her and grandad's time together. I wish I had got more memories of him; he passed away when I was just 2 years old due to an illness.
"The method I used; I don't know how effective will it be. It is a rather tedious method which involves you to dig deep into your brain and analyse the memory based on which you're having a nightmare over and over again. It's called dream journaling. It is a rather long process which can be mentally exhausting at times. However, once you get the hang of it, things become easier quite soon."
"I'm ready Granny. I want to do this. I will do this, no matter how hard it is."
"That's my girl!" my granny said cheerfully.
This is what I love about her. At one moment, she's my granny preparing healthy food for me and sharing her wisdom and one moment, she becomes a teenage girl.
