"Hey sweetheart," Elena entered Calista's bedroom, her long black hair put in a ponytail revealing her thin face. Calista's mother never put her hair up, only if the weather was really hot and at that moment definitely wasn't. Her aquamarine eyes matched the almost-ready weather to snow. Snow was white but it could perfectly match someone's eyes considering them as cold and full of pain. Because the cold snow was painful as well.
"Hi, mom." Calista smiled. She was under her warm red blanket she had of course stolen from the Capitol. Though it was one of the best things she could have— let's say — borrow from a place like the Capitol. She always took things closer to food and simple clothes but that velvet blanket had won her heart. "What's up?"
"Just wanted to see how you are doing." Her mother replied simply as she took a seat at the end of the bed. These days district citizens couldn't feel more alone. In less than a week Christmas Eve would greet them, again, like every year trying to offer them some more happiness and allow them to wish or hope for a better tomorrow— which never came anyway but they still had to try. During Christmas you were supposed to be with your family, but what family? For them, there was no relative alive, no siblings, no parents at all.
They were all alone. Calista luckily still had her mother, but only ten out of one hundred ten would still have someone. They were more like a family as citizens as they were close enough with each other to share something more than a "Good morning," or "How are you doing?". Twelve included parents who had lost their children. Grandparents who had lost their kids and grandchildren. Orphan babies because their parents died at birth and after a few days they left their last breath, going to find their family and live all together in a happier place.
The future of Twelve depended on Calista first of all and after Christy and Lucas if something happened to her, as they were the next younger citizens in there. Eighty percent of the citizens were under the age of seventy, while only twenty percent included people above their early forties. The image was exasperating. And then they wondered why someone would prefer to kill themselves. At least they had a perfect life up there with everything.
"Hm weird, because when you come out of nowhere, sit in my bed, and look at me with an expression like that— like you are feeling sorry — you definitely want something more than just to see how I am." Calista laughed softly, knowing her mother's actions perfectly. Elena returned the chuckle and said,
"Maybe you are right," she sighed "I, I just want to apologize for the millionth time that you are forced to celebrate events like Christmas in that way. I swear...I" This happened every year, Calista sitting in front of her mother, listening to her apologies while she cried about how much she had failed to offer Calista a dreamy life. But it wasn't really her fault. Elena hadn't chosen to live like this either. She was born in this Hell and was forced to tolerate it exactly like Calista.
