I pulled my car keys out of my pocket as I walked up to my car and unlocked it. I opened the driver's side door and got in. I threw my duffle bag onto the back seat, put my key in the ignition and started up my car. I drove to the gate of the base and waited for it to open. As I slowed down at the gate, my phone rang. I answered the call and put in on speaker as the gate opened and I drove through, heading towards the main road.
"Hi dad!" I said as I put my phone on speaker.
"Hi Sweetheart. How are you?" My dad asked.
"I'm doing good. How about you and mama?" I wondered. I haven't heard much from mom in a while.
"We are good. your mother is getting a little home sick. she misses you a lot. you haven't been home in over a year." My dad explained.
I felt bad. I normally get to go home every 3-6 months, but I haven't been able to in a year and a half.
"I know dad. I'm sorry I haven't been home in a while, it's been really busy here at base. Got a lot of places to be." It was my turn to explain as I pulled onto the main road.
"But on the Brightside, I got clearance to go home in about 2 weeks!" I said, lying to my dad.
Yes, I was driving home. The plane that brought me and the other soldiers to the small air base so we could head home landed about 20 minutes before I got in my car, but I didn't tell my parents because I didn't want them to know I was driving home. I wanted to surprise them because I hadn't been able to surprise them in a while.
"That's good." My dad said. I was able to hear the smile in his voice.
"We can't wait to see you soon." my dad added on. His voice sounded happier.
"Well dad, I have to go. My Colonel needs me. I will call as soon as I can." I said. I entered the city and was about 10 minutes away from home.
"Alright. please be safe." My dad told me, a bit of worry laced his voice.
"I will. You know I always am." I said.
"I know, but still. Your mother and I both want you to come home in one piece." My dad laughed a little.
"I know. I will talk to you soon, ok? I love you and mom. Bye dad." I smiled. only a couple more minutes.
"We love you too. Bye Kiddo." My dad said, then hung up.
As I drove, Getting closer to my street, I started to recognize the area. After about 2 minutes, I took the next right onto my street. As I drove down the road, I looked at all the children playing in their yards. I smiled at the memories of me and my family playing in our yard on hot summer days like today. I slowed down as I pulled up to my house and pulled into my driveway. I grabbed my duffle bag, got out of my car and locked it as I walked up to the front door. I opened the door and walked into the house. I take off my shoes like normal and quietly make my way up to my room. I put my duffle bag on the floor and got changed out of my uniform and into a pair of blue jean shorts and a (F/C) Tank top. I pulled my hair out of its bun and I loosely braided it over my shoulder. I folded my uniform and piled it neatly on my bed for the time being. I walked back down the stairs and made my way back to the entryway.
"MAMA! DAD! I'm going to a friend's house for a bit." I called out, knowing full well that my parents were sitting in the living room.
I smiled lightly as I heard my mother rush from the living room to the entryway and she pulled me into a hug. My dad not far behind my mom.
"Hi mama. Hi dad. I'm home." I said softly with a smile.
"I-I thought you weren't coming home for another 2 weeks." My mother said as she pulled away from the hug, her eyes starting to water as she smiled.
"Surprise." I laughed lightly as I pulled my parents into a hug.
"How long are you here?" My dad asked.
"2 months. I got clearance for a longer visit." I smiled at my dad.
"That's great!" Mama said, smiling at me with excitement.
We walked into the living, as my parents wanted to catch up with me. my parents sat on the couch and I sat on the chair.
"So you're still doing well in the Military?" My dad asked.
"I'm doing really well. Past couple of months have been a little stressful with the alterations." I said.
"What are the alterations?" My dad wondered.
"Oh right. So my division has been split into two groups. one group is out in the field for a certain amount of time while the other group rests. After that certain amount of time, the groups will switch places." I explained.
