Chapter 15: That was all I heard before I dropped my phone and it crashed to the floor~

“Why didn’t you ever tell me about your mother?” Austin asked as he stroked my hair.

“I guess I was just trying to forget,” I replied, honestly.

After the big blow out with my father, Austin and I walked to his house. We were now lying in his bed and I was in his arms after I had just told him everything. Well, almost everything. I’ve decided to leave out the part about the cutting. It’s not like it’s important. It’s not like I do it anymore. Besides, I don’t need to give him another reason to worry about me. I’m not trying to scare him off.

He nodded and said, “So does anyone else know?”

“Just you and Robert.”

He raised an eyebrow, gesturing for me to explain.

“Robert was with me the day she died,” I choked out.

His grip on me tightened as he felt me tense up. He rubbed my arm with one hand and stroked my hair with the other, attempting to sooth me. Honestly, just being in his arms calmed me down. Just being with him at all was enough to make me content.

“I’m sorry. I know how hard all of this is for you to talk about. I know that you didn’t have to tell me. It’s okay if you don’t want to talk about it anymore,” he said, understandingly.

“No, it’s fine,” I assured him, “I think it’s better if I talk about it. I’ve held it all in for too long. You’re the only person I could open up to.”

“Well I just want you to know that I’m always here for you. I kind of get what you’re going through. You already know about how my dad passed away when I was younger. So I know what it’s like to live with only one parent. Although, your situation is probably way worse. You actually knew your mom. I was too young to even remember my dad. I guess it’s better if I didn’t know him. I can’t even imagine getting to know him, loving him, and then getting him taken away from me, just like that…” his voice trailed off.

I began to feel sorry for Austin. It must be hard for him, growing up without a dad. At least I had both parents for a while.

He’s right, though. I should’ve come to him sooner. Out of all people, I could’ve related to Austin the most. Even if my situation is worse, he still could’ve understood, just as he is now.

“I want to be here for you, Courtney. You can talk to me. I care about you, Courtney.”

“Thank you, Austin. It really means a lot,” I smiled, “And you know I’m here for you too.”

He smiled and started to lean in. I slowly closed my eyes, preparing for his lips to meet mine when my phone vibrated in my pocket.

He sighed and I giggled as I slide my phone out of my back pocket. Even though it said ‘Unknown’ I decided to answer it anyway.

“Hello?”

“Courtney Anderson?”

“Yes?”

“Are you the daughter of Charles Anderson?”

“Yes,” I sighed, almost ashamed to admit it.

“Well I’m sorry to tell you that your father was in a car accident a few moments ago due to him being intoxicated. He’s in critical condition and I’m afraid he might not make it. I think you should come to the hospital as soon as you can – ”

That was all I heard before I dropped my phone and it crashed to the floor.

My father, the person I just saw a few hours ago, got into an accident. My father, the only parent I have left, could die. As much as I might think I hate him, he’s the only thing I have left.

And the last words I spoke to my father were ‘Drop dead’.
