Chapter 001: Campaign Night

***

July 18th 1987

IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT AT CAMP RAVENWOOD.

Peggy smiled as she walked down the paths in and around the camp, flashlight cleaving the dark. The sound of cicadas and nighttime animals provided background music, the stars sprayed across the dark expanse of sky. These were the nights she loved most, despite the heat and humidity, the quiet nights at Camp Ravenwood just after the sun had set and true dark was set to fall upon the world. The nights where Peggy felt like the only person alive in the world.

Even the nights where she had to lock up the campers' cabins after lights out, before she could head to her cabin and crash for the night until she had to get up and organise everything for the campers and her fellow counsellors tomorrow morning—readying everything for the last week of camp.

Her last week of camp.

As she locked up a cabin, Peggy still couldn't believe that this would be the last time she would be coming to Camp Ravenwood. It had become such a huge part of her life, ever since she first came here as a camper. It was where she'd met her best friend, Andrea, where she'd spent so many summers as a kid and teenager. And now, it was almost over as she got more involved in college, that she would be passing the reins to the new counsellors—whether they were former campers or teenagers wanting tp spend their summer as counsellors, Peggy didn't know and didn't care.

Only that she would come away with memories and a close friendship that would last forever.

As Peggy finished locking the cabin, she heard giggling. Swinging her flashlight, Peggy saw that two girls were opening the door of the next cabin over, grinning and obviously planning to sneak out after lights out.

"Hey!" Peggy yelled, spooking the campers as they whirled to her. "What are you doing? Get back in your cabin, now!"

The girls obeyed, scurrying back into their cabin. Peggy stomped up to it and locked it up tight. For good measure, she shone her flashlight in the windows, checking to see if any of the girls inside were planning to get out through the window, but they were all in bed, all the lights out except for one. Satisfied, Peggy stepped away from the cabin, intending to finish her round—

And jumped as she heard a voice say, "Whoa, I thought we were looking after the campers, not scaring them."

Peggy sighed heavily as she lowered her flashlight. "Jesus, Dylan. You gave me a heart attack."
