Chapter 006: The Second Disappearance
***
JULY 21ST, 1987
A breeze was what alerted Peggy that something was wrong.
She stirred from sleep at feeling the bizarre coolness teasing at her face, blowing wispy strands of hair over her cheek. Peggy frowned, the breeze an oddity in the cabin, not when the windows were supposed to be closed and locked—
Peggy's eyes snapped open and she bolted up, looking straight at the window—the open window, sheer curtains fluttering with the mild wind coming through.
Leaping out of her bed, Peggy ran to Jude's bed and roughly shook the blonde girl's shoulder, hissing, "Jude, wake up! Jude, wake the fuck up now! Jude!"
"Wha issit?" Jude mumbled, sleep slurring her words as she twisted over, ignoring Peggy. "Lemme sleep five more minnits."
"Jude, the window's open!" Peggy whispered, all her panic and urgency condensed in a single sentence.
That finally woke up Jude as she sat up, eyes wide, a strand of blonde hair in her mouth. In any other situation, it would look comical. "What?"
"The window. Is fucking. Open," Peggy hissed, panic and urgency again emphasised in that last word.
"Oh shit," Jude mumbled as she looked at the window, curtains flapping innocently. "Oh shit!"
Jude lunged out of the bed, sheets tangling around her legs and threatening to trip her as Jude fought free—again, if not for the situation and overwhelming panic clawing at Peggy, it would be hilarious. Andrea would laugh—wait.
Where was Andrea?
She can't seriously still be asleep, Peggy thought as Jude ran to the window, grabbed the frame, peered out at the woods, and cursed for a third time, "Oh shit."
"Why is it open? Who opened it? I thought it was closed!" Peggy rambled, panic scrambling her brain, turning her body loose and tense at once, everything in her working in all the wrong ways, like she was malfunctioning at her very centre.
"I don't know! I closed it, Peggy. I checked that lock three times before I fell asleep! I closed it!" Jude exploded, fisting a hand through her mussed hair before dropping it. "Fuck! This is... fuck. And why the fuck is your friend still fucking asleep?!"
Peggy opened her mouth but didn't get the chance as Jude stomped to Andrea's bed and yelled, "Hey, Sleeping Beauty, time to come back to the land of the living, we have a situation he—"
Jude's words came to a stop, her face draining of colour as Peggy finally looked at Andrea's bed.
And shut down.
