Chapter 021: Confessions In The Dark
***
JULY 24TH-25TH, 1987
Shock.
That was the only thing Peggy felt, all she could feel, as she stared at the darkness behind her, the horrific cave that was the Beast's lair and where it devoured its victims just beyond it.
Where Ryan was, taken over by the Beast, chosen to become its Axeman, had stabbed Luisa and murdered Barlow, had tried to kill them all.
Peggy didn't know whether she should scream or cry.
A hand tugged on her arm and she turned, squinting through the darkness before she heard Marcus say, "Come on. We have to go."
"Go? Go where?" Peggy asked, her voice hoarse from screaming.
"To camp. We have to warn the other counsellors, and the campers," Marcus said. "Before..."
Before Ryan got back to camp. Before the ten were completed and whatever blood sport the Beast wanted was made.
Peggy wanted to scream. How could they have hoped to stop this creature, to stop the murderer that now wore the face of their friend, who'd desperately wanted to find Hannah, but now could have possibly been her killer? How naive had they been to think they could ended this bloody history, to destroy the monsters hiding in the shadows and campfire ghost stories, that they could end such evil?
How naive, how foolish, of them.
Peggy swallowed back her screams, her sobs, as she slumped down onto the ground, staring into the darkness. She could hear everyone around her, hear the laboured breathing from Luisa and Dylan due to their injuries, holding her knees to her chest as she tried to not break down any more than she had. Ryan's possession, his eyes slicked over with black. Andrea's body, hanging from the pillar, a sacrifice and meal for the Beast. Andrea, her best friend, Andrea, who she'd never got the chance to apologise for the fight, Andrea, who Peggy had promised to find and to save but had failed, Andrea, who Peggy had lost, Andrea, Andrea, Andrea.
I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
"Peggy? Peggy, hey, are you with us? Peggy, talk to me."
Peggy looked up, and though it was dark, she knew Marcus was there, that it was his hands holding her face, his presence she could feel, comforting her like he always did. Being by her side, looking after her, staying by her.
Marcus, who Peggy felt safe with.
A sob stuck in her throat, Peggy tackled Marcus, holding him in a tight hug, silent tears pouring out.
"I got you, Pegs. I got you," he murmured. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry about Andrea."
"I... I'm sorry about Hannah," Peggy gasped out, voice gargled with tears. "I... I can't... I..."
