Chapter 008: The Third Disappearance
***
JULY 22ND, 1987
A pounding on the door was what woke up Peggy.
Lifting her head, Peggy squinted in the faint dawn light streaming in through the window as Jude groaned and slid out of bed, mumbling, "God, who's the fucking asshole banging on the door this early in the morning?"
Peggy silently agreed as she sat up. As she did, something fell to the floor. Peggy looked and saw it was Andrea's diary, which she had been reading last night, trying to understand what her best friend was talking about—what she and Dylan had seen, the creature she'd drawn underneath—before she fell asleep. As Jude stood in front of the door, the frantic pounding shaking the door frame, Peggy grabbed the diary and slid it under her pillow, a part of her not wanting anyone to see what Andrea had written, that she wanted to figure out her secrets herself, before Jude unlocked and opened the door and revealed a frantic Ryan behind it.
"Ryan? Dude, why the fuck are you battering down our door at the goddamn crack of dawn?" Jude demanded, the grouchy blonde crossing her arms.
Instead of answering, Ryan turned wild, panicked eyes between Jude and Peggy and asked, "Have you seen Hannah?"
"Not since last night," Jude answered, some of the grouchiness fading slightly. She and Ryan glanced over to Peggy, who shook her head and replied, "I haven't seen her since last morning at the drama and music cabin. Why?"
Panic bled into Ryan's face as he fisted a handful of his hair and revealed, "I was going to her cabin—I wanted to visit her, before camp started—but she wasn't there. Maeve and Indira, they say they haven't seen her since last night. That she... she didn't come back to her cabin last night. And now I'm freaking out and asking everyone if they saw her, but they haven't and you guys were my last chance, but you haven't, and now I think... I think she may be missing."
The last of the annoyance dropped from Jude's face and was replaced with panic as Peggy tensed.
"Oh fuck," Jude breathed, the panic spreading over her face, Peggy remaining frozen as her roommate slowly shook her head. "Not Hannah, it can't be Hannah, she can't be..."
"We have to find her," Ryan said, panic trembling in his voice. "I can't... we can't wait. We have to find her now."
"You're right," Peggy murmured, directing Jude and Ryan's attention to her. Forcing herself to straighten, to take command, Peggy said louder, "We have to go now. Does Carter know?'
"No, but he's going to be seeing Maeve, so he'll—"
"Tell him anyway. Jude, help me get everyone up. We need all of us counsellors on the search. Let's go, before the kids wake up," Peggy ordered, getting up to put on her sneakers.
