Chapter 014: The Mystery Deepens
***
JULY 23RD, 1987
After getting his camera from his cabin, Logan ran to the place he knew Counsellor Carter would be at—the lifeguard tower at the lake.
Out of all the counsellors, Logan trusted Carter the most, and hoped he would believe him—that despite him annoying Carter half to death with the obsession Logan had been right about and the campaigns, Carter would listen to him when Logan would tell him that he'd seen Sophie die, that he had proof on his camera, that he'd believe him and they could properly mount a search for the others missing. He had to believe Logan.
He had to.
When the lifeguard tower appeared, facing toward the campers swimming and splashing in the water, both escaping the heat and the dread of the disappearances and who could go next, Logan was relieved at seeing the familiar sight of Carter Lane in the lifeguard tower, watching over the campers carefully.
"Carter!" Logan shouted, waving his arms around to catch his attention.
Carter looked at him for a split second before turning back to the lake, until he realised who was trying to get his attention and faced Logan properly. "Logan?"
"Hey, Counsellor Carter!" Logan exclaimed, waving again as Carter stared at him, sunglasses lifted above his head, the whistle hanging around his neck. "I need to tell you something!"
Carter rolled his eyes. "Can it wait until I'm off-duty, you little shit?"
"No, it can't, asshole! I need to talk to you! It's important—really important! Please," Logan yelled, a little bit of pleading in his voice.
Carter looked up at the sky, as if begging for a higher power to give him more tolerance to deal with Logan or to maybe smite him—both options could be likely—before he let out a heavy sigh and climbed down from the lifeguard tower. Logan's heart thumped with the feeling of triumph as he and Carter headed a couple metres away from the lake in relative privacy, where Carter folded his arms and glared at Logan.
"What the hell do you want to tell me, Logan? I'm trying to keep campers like you from drowning," Carter demanded.
"Carter, I saw something last night. Something really bad," Logan murmured, dropping his voice. "I went into the woods during the talent show last night, and—"
"You went into the woods?!" Carter whisper-yelled, before he ran a hand onto his face. "Jesus, Logan. What were you thinking? I told you not to do anything stupid for your mystery!"
"Yeah, I know, it was stupid and I shouldn't have done it. I got chewed out pretty severely for it by my friends," Logan snapped. "But that's not important. Carter, I saw something in the woods, and I know it's gonna sound crazy, but you have to believe me. Please."
