Subtracting And Adding
Peering out the window onto the school parking lot proves to be a regrettable choice. Romeo and Holly are locked in an embrace, exchanging kisses as if they're on the brink of a long, inevitable separation.
A snicker escapes me. Only a fool would trust Romeo's fidelity. Who knows who he'll ensnare next on this trip?
I've reached my limit. With another snicker, I pull out my mirror and reapply my lip gloss.
"I'll be back in a sec," Julissa announces, rising from her seat but leaving her purse behind, her gaze lingering on the scene outside.
"Where to? The bus is about to leave, and I'm not holding it for you," I tease.
Truth be told, I dread being left alone. Romeo's proximity, with his latest conquest, drives me nuts. He isn't being sent to the war.
"Melissa needs something from me; she's over there with George. Save my spot even if you see me running behind the bus."
I nod, understanding, my eyes fixed on her as she navigates the aisle toward the exit. Glancing back at the window, I notice the lovebirds still there.
I bring down the window, uncap my water bottle and squeeze it. The pressure is strong enough to sprinkle them. Holly's luck isn't on her side because it wets her more than him. Holly squeals in surprise and I can't help but laugh. The other passengers join.
Romeo looks up angry but when he catches my gaze and I shrug, he smiles. He sends Holly on her way and starts heading to the bus.
The sound of giggles fills the space beside me as the cheerleaders take their seats. Their chatter is inescapable, and my gaze drifts across the student line, catching Romeo sending sly waves their way.
"Lena, feeling anxious?" Gabby's voice floats from behind.
Mirror and lip gloss suspended mid-air, I swivel to face her.
"Hey, Gabby, not at all. I'm brimming with confidence that I'll be returning with the championship."
"That's the spirit," she beams, tearing open a bag of chips and offering some, which I politely decline.
My eyes sweep over her cheerleader's physique. The role demands a lightness, often leaving her as the base of their human pyramids. I am tempted to tell her to watch what she eats but since it is not my body and my business I turn to my makeup.
"We're counting on the boys as well," she says between mouthfuls, unwrapping a chocolate bar.
I wrinkle my nose, mentally tallying the calories she's about to consume. I'd steer clear of that, especially now.
"Let's hope they deliver," I say.
