The Reaping

______________________________________

It was just before 9 AM in the capitol. Mercedes and Coriolanus were dressed in their best clothes.

Mercedes was in a white silk dress that went down to her knees. Her dress was paired with black heels. Her hair was down, behind her ears. Her brother was in a black suit. Boring.

They were on their way to the academy, where their classmates were waiting.

They stopped at the doors and looked at one another before Coriolanus pushed the door open and held it for Mercedes.

"Thank you." He nodded and smiled at her. They walked into the large room, which was packed with their teachers, their classmates and their parents.

Coriolanus walked up to a small group of classmates, one of which was Arachne Crane. Mercedes despised Arachne, so she kept her distance by standing behind her brother.

She stood there, listening to their conversation. They began talking about Sejanus, her friend. So she decided to introduce herself into the conversation.

"Please do not talk about Sejanus in such a degrading manner. He is just like all of us here." She smiled sarcastically at them.

"I wondered where your lovely sister was, couldn't see you behind your brother. Your brother really did take your father's genes, especially the height. Anyway, it's always a pleasure, Mercedes." Festus greeted her, a hint of sarcasm in his tone.

"It's, clearly, always a pleasure, talking to you lot-" She was stopped when she felt a hand on her shoulder. The group went silent.

"Isn't it great to see you all here together, the ones that really want the Plinth prize," Sejanus mentioned.

"Sejanus, it's great to see you." Mercedes hugged the boy, who was standing next to her. She let go of him and was met with a smile from him.

"Mercedes, I have faith in you winning the prize."

"You're just saying that because you two are dating." Arachne interrupted, and Mercedes rolled her eyes.

"We're not dating. No need to get jealous, Arachne. Not everyone has to like you." Mercedes grinned at the girl opposite to her who just scoffed.

They remained in a chat for several minutes before they were interrupted by an announcement, "Students please make your way to the main hall."

They all looked up, Sejanus entwined his and Mercedes' elbows. They walked off towards the hall and Sejanus whispered to her, "Mercedes, there isn't any Plinth prize. Not yet, anyway."

She looked up at him, "What do you mean?"

"I heard my father talking about it, normally they'd choose who gets the Plinth prize now, right?" She nodded.

"But they want us to do another challenge. I don't know what it is, though." Her eyebrows furrowed together but she thanked him, nevertheless.

They walked into the hall and sat in their seats, at the front. Her brother was on the left of her and Sejanus was on her right.

As everyone settled, Dr Gaul walked out onto the stage and up to the microphone.

She introduced herself before she introduced the Dean, Highbottom. She explained everything that Sejanus had said. She mentioned what the challenge was though.

It was the 10th annual Hunger Games, and each student at the front of the hall was going to be assigned a tribute. The mentors must try to keep their tribute alive as long as they can or help them win.

Everyone looked back at the short man who was too busy drinking something. He walked forward to the front of the hall and he coughed.

"Ho there..." He paused, "Reading the things off, now." He waved around the papers that assigned each student to their tribute.

He squinted at the paper before he put his glasses on. "Ah." The two screens lit up, revealing the tributes who had been reaped.

"District One. Boy goes to Livia Cardew. Girl goes to Palmyra Monty." Both mentors jumped up, gratefully. Others groaned.

"District two. Boy goes to Sejanus Plinth. Girl goes to Florus Friend."

"You got the pick of the litter!" Coriolanus exclaimed, happy for the boy. Sejanus was the opposite.

"You forget, I'm part of that litter." He replied, bitterly. Mercedes rubbed his back, soothingly.

...

Mercedes not Coriolanus' names had been called yet and they were getting worried.

"District Seven. Boy goes to Mercedes Snow. Girl goes to Pliny Harrington." She looked up at the boy. Her eyes widened and then she smiled.

...

"District Twelve. Boy goes to Lysistrata Vickers. Girl goes to... Coriolanus Snow." Coriolanus' face dropped, he got the worst tribute anyone could ever get. The fact it was a female tribute made it even worse. Girls were typically weaker than the guys.

"Holy shit." Mercedes turned her head to look at Coriolanus, she contained her laughter. Yes, they were siblings but she still wanted to win.

A while after talking with others in the hall, they decided it was time to make their way home. Michaela stood beside Coriolanus and they made their way out of the academy.

...

In District Seven.

Treech was on his way to the reaping stage, he was seventeen now. That meant his name was in there six times, that wasn't that much compared to how many names were in there.

On his way there he met up with Lamina who was worried, she repeated that she had a bad feeling about that day but Treech pushed it aside.

"Lamina, trust me. You won't get reaped. We won't get reaped. Other people are older than us and their names are in there more ours, so they'll probably get reaped."

"Not us." He finished, reassuring her. He was confident, or at least he was pretending to be.

They reached the stage, and others were already there, including the mayor. Lamina turned to Treech and gave him a sad look. He walked to the left and she walked to the right.

The mayor began speaking a few minutes later, "Hello, youths of District Seven." He smiled at them.

"Let's just get started, get it over and done with." He walked to the right side of the stage and looked at the male tribute bowl of names.

"Suspenseful, right?" He grinned at them before he stuck his hand in and mixed it around. He grabbed onto a piece of paper.

He pulled it out and looked at the name, he searched the crowd for the boy before revealing his name, "Treech Lowlock."

Treech's head snapped to the right, Lamina was in shock. She didn't move. He gulped and walked to the right, he looked up at the stage and walked forward.

He walked up the stairs and stood beside the mayor who shook his hand. He looked over the crowd, looking at Lamina. Tears were already spilling out of her eyes, her gut feeling was right.

"Now for the ladies," he walked to the female tribute bowl of names. He picked up the first one he touched. He looked and Treech before he looked at the crowd.

"Lamina Ashcreek." She fell to the ground, Treech's voice echoing in her mind.

"No!" Treech screamed, running at the mayor. A peacekeeper was quick to knock him to the ground.

Lamina was dragged to the stage and she was forced to stand there. They eventually let go of her and she stood up herself. Treech stood in front of the camera, as did Lamina.

Lamina stood there sobbing and looking around, probably for help. Treech looked into the camera, emotionless.

Not long after, they were taken to the back of the stage and were told that they had to wait for a train to bring them to the Capitol. If they didn't oblige, their families would be killed.
