Daphne sat in her room, the small alarm clock's red numbers read 2:34am.
A year exactly to the minute had passed since she and Elizabeth had lost their parents.
In front of her she had the old bucket list. She managed to keep it hidden from her sister and grandfather and over time had accomplished many of the items without their knowledge. Taking a small crayon left in the box she crossed off 'try Brussel sprouts' and look at the almost completed list. She placed in back in the box but not before noticing an envelope she didn't recognize. Picking it up it read 'For when I'm gone'. Daphne slowly opened it and unfolded the letter seeing the handwriting that would forever be imprinted in her mind.
To my Daffodil,
If you're reading this then your mother and I must be gone. Hopefully you don't have to read this until you're all grown up yourself but the future is unknowing. I want you to know that you have always been special. I want you to tell your sister that as well. You've always been the one to stick to the rules while she's been more shall we say, free spirited. I know it will be hard but you have to let her go okay? She needs to explore and live life. You two are so perfect together because of how you compliment each other, you're mother and I are so proud. I know this sounds like just ramblings of your crazy old dad but I just need you to do one more thing,
Don't be afraid to fall in love.
I know you probably scoffed at that but my dad senses tell me you won't be like your sister and start having boyfriends at age five. You're a beautiful girl who doesn't even know it and you need to find that person who will remind you every day how special you are when I'm not able to okay?
But you're still not allowed to date until your thirty okay?
I know I can't put all my emotions into one letter so I created a series of them in case I end up being gone for a while. Your mother did the same for Elizabeth and we placed them in the old trunk we kept the blankets in. Whenever you feel like you need us go and look in there. Some are for special occasions and others just to help cheer you up.
Love,
Your Father
