MAISIE PACED around the hall, fidgeting with her camp necklace. She was worried, not for herself, no. Her and Leo were actually pretty safe here in the hall. Cal basically just sat there, staring at them with a blank expression, probably thinking about hockey, or something. No, she was worried about Jason and Piper. Before the goddess left she had mentioned that Maisie and Leo would be safe, but Jason and Piper would not be. Now she wished she would have insisted on coming with them. She could have helped them fight, even if it would have been against two gods.
There was the sound of footsteps crunching on the frosty carpet. Maisie's head snapped over to the hallway, where she expected to see the goddess and Zethes to be coming to kill them, but it wasn't just them, Jason and Piper were there too.
Maisie relaxed a little, and she put her dagger back into her pocket.
Once the group reached the bottom step, the goddess turned to Piper, "You have fooled my father, girl. But you have not fooled me. We are not done. And you, Jason Grace, I will see you as a statue in the throne room soon enough."
Maisie wrapped her hand around the handle of the dagger, just in case the goddess decided to attack.
"Boreas is right," Jason said. "You're a spoiled kid. See you around, ice princess."
The goddess' eyes flared pure white, but she seemed at a loss for word, which was surprising for a goddess. She stormed back up the stairs - literally. Halfway up, she turned into a blizzard and disappeared.
"Be careful," Zethes warned. "She never forgets and insult."
Cal grunted in agreement, "Bad sister."
"She's the goddess of snow," Jason said. "What's she going to do, throw snowballs at us?"
Maisie couldn't help but be reminded of Percy when he said that. It sounded exactly like something he would say. She couldn't help but miss her friend.
Leo looked devastated, "What happened up there? You made her mad? Is she mad at me too? Guys, that was my prom date!"
Maisie rolled his eyes at Leo. Of course he would get a crush on the immortal goddess.
"We'll explain later," Piper promised, and glanced at Jason.
"Yeah," he agreed, "we'll explain later."
"Be careful, pretty girl," Zethes said. "The winds between here and Chicago are bad-tempered. Many other evil things are stirring. I am sorry you will not be staying. You would make a lovely ice statue, in which I could check my reflection."
What is with these to talking about turning Jason and Piper into ice statues?
"Thanks," Piper said. "But I'd sooner play hockey with Cal."
"Hockey?" Cal's eyes lit up.
"Joking," Piper said. "And the storm winds aren't or worst problem, are they?"
"Oh no," Zethes agreed. "Something else. Something wore."
Maisie sighed. Of course there was something worse. There was always something worse.
"Worse," Cal echoes.
"Can you tell me?" Piper gave them a smile.
This time, her charm didn't work on the Boreads. They shook their heads in unison. The hangar doors opened onto a freezing starry night. Maisie shivered as the wind from outside blew in, making the already freezing room even colder. Festus stomped his feet, anxious to fly.
"Ask Aeolus what is worse," Zethes said darkly. "He knows. Good luck."
He almost sounded like he cared about what happened to them, even though a few minutes ago he'd been talking about making Piper into an ice sculpture.
