The soft morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow on Aurora's bedroom a day later. However, today was different. It was Aurora's birthday, and despite the efforts to make it special, she found herself unable to shake off the heavy weight that hung in the air.
She stirred in bed, her eyes blinking open letting themselves readjust to the light. Aurora glanced to her left to see a tray on her nightstand held a steaming cup of coffee and a plate of beignets, this caused her to reach over and pick up the note on it.
Happy Birthday, sweetheart. Plan on going out to lunch today with me. I love you - Mom
Aurora smiled softly at this before reaching over and grabbing the beignet and taking a bite letting the satisfaction wash over her. But as she did so Aurora let her eyes glance at the calendar on her wall, the reality of the situation crashed over her. It had only been a day since she and Elena escaped a kidnapping with the help of the Salvatore brother's, and the chaos that ensued still echoed in her mind. The previous day, Elena's self-attempted to give herself to Klaus to protect her family but all was intervened with the help of Damon and Elijah's unexpected appearance confirming that he was in fact still alive, and on top of all of that Stefan got trapped in the tomb with Katherine—all of it weighed heavily on Aurora's shoulders.
With a heavy sigh, Aurora put her beignet back on the tray and pushed herself into a sitting position, running a hand through her tousled hair. Birthdays had never been her favorite, and this one, in particular, felt more like a cruel reminder of the fragility of their lives.
Downstairs, the hushed voices continued as Aurora summoned the strength to face the day. She slipped out of bed, glancing at herself in the mirror with a sigh. As Aurora got dressed, she couldn't help but overhear snippets of Damon and Elena's conversation. Their words drifted up the staircase, a blend of concern and strategy. Aurora assumed they were discussing the recent events, trying to figure out how to deal with Elijah and Stefan trapped in the tomb.
Taking a deep breath, Aurora walked downstairs. As she entered the living room, she found Damon, Elena, and Jeremy engaged in conversation. "Hey, what's going on?" Aurora wondered curiously making Damon look up. "Elena was on a suicide mission, so Bonnie trapped her in the house." Damon shrugged nonchalantly making Elena shoot him a glare as Aurora raised an eyebrow, not entirely surprised by Elena's impulsive actions.
The girl then turned around and headed to the kitchen, grabbing a cup to fill with water - with Jeremy following her unnoticed. He reached into a drawer and pulled out an envelope, waiting for Aurora to turn back around. When she did, her eyes widened at the unexpected gesture.
"Happy birthday, Rory." Jeremy smiled as Aurora coughed on her water, genuinely surprised. "You didn't think I forgot, did you?" "Thanks, Jer. But you didn't have to get me anything... you know how I feel about birthday's." Aurora reminds the boy making him nod knowingly.
