"You are nothing but a mistake Vivian, you will become nothing but worthless." My father's voice booms through the house as I retreat up the stairs. "Don't you fucking walk away from me!" He shouts, causing me to freeze in my tracks. All I did was get a B on my report card. "I'm sorry, it won't happen again." I hang my head low in hopes he will feel bad and let me go to my room.
"What's done is done, you'll never be able to make that up. You're a failure. Nothing but a goddamn failure!" He slammed his hand down on the table, causing me to jerk. I rushed up the final stairs, swinging the door closed behind me as I made it to my room.
He is just being tough on you. I repeat over and over, trying to convince myself it is just tough love. He just wants you to achieve greatness, without honesty, I will go nowhere. I believe every word he says, it helps me exceed, to push myself past the limits I never thought I could.
I hear my father's footsteps stomping up the stairs before his fisting start pounding on my door. "Did you hear me, Vivian? I'm disappointed, I'm disappointed to call you my daughter!"
Memories of my father flood my brain as I stare at the caller ID on my phone. The worst way to wake up imaginable. Adonis is nowhere to be found, but right now, I'm sort of glad. the phone goes quiet, and for a second I hoped he butt-dialed me, but the aggravating ringtone filled my ears for the second time.
"Hello?" I placed him on speakerphone, resting my phone on my chest as he spoke. "Vivian? Where are you?" what does he care? "I'm in bed..? why'd you call?" His familiar scoff echoes, "You're spending time with who knows off in New York instead of visiting your parents. Your mother is a wreck Vivain." He must've checked the credit card statements.
"Put her on the phone." He has always brought my mom into things like this to make me feel bad. "She's working. Tell me who you're too busy sleeping with to visit your own goddamn family!" His anger seeped through the phone, sending chills up my spine. He can only hold his composure for so long. "So it's true, huh? It's a boy? That's what you waste your time with instead of working, or getting a degree?"
I feel my father's rage building up in me. I stay quiet, trying not to give him the satisfaction of getting angry. "You're pathetic, Vivian. One day, when you fuck things up, don't come crawling back to us. That's what you do, you know. You're just like your mother." I should've hung up, I know that, but for some reason, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. In a way, his degrading is, painfully comforting.
"I'm on vacation with Valentina." only half a lie. "That girl is going nowhere with you in her life, you're poison. Do everyone a favor and come visit us instead, you're better off over here." He got under my skin, just like he always does. "Fuck you." I hung up the phone, tossing it to the side. After all of these years of understanding and acceptance, he still finds his way to get up under my skin.
Truth be told, I've always felt like he is right. I bring people down, I rely on Val, my energy makes people feel down, and I'm just a leech forced into their lives. I've been trying so hard not to push my friends away, but it feels like all of my hard work has faltered at this moment. I need to do something to get my mind off of this, to leave this feeling behind me, but I have no energy to do so.
